“My Creative Room”

Kat from Dandelion Fuzz asks:

“Do you have a special place you like to write? Do you need silence or do you prefer background noise? Where do you write? “

As you can see from the picture above, I have a whole room dedicated for my writing and blogging.  I call this room “My Creative Room.”  This is where I go each day to compose my poetry, transcribe my dreams from the Swamp Fairy, and to share my thoughts on my blog.

Some days I play music, my favorite 80’s rock, classical, country, Pink Floyd, or any other tunes I can get my hands on.  I love music with chanting and some of my best writing is done while that is playing in the background.  I love all kinds of music and depending on my mood – you never know what I will be listening to.  Some days I have a candle with scented oil lit, and the fragrance wafts throughout my house.  Some days it is all hushed and quiet in my creative room.  I enjoy those days too.  All you can hear are my fingers at the keyboard, tapping those words out of my head and heart.

I have a huge recliner in the back corner of my creative room.  Sugar likes to take naps on that chair while the sunlight warms her aging dog-bones.

I do like peace and quiet to write in.  If I am doing research for my book, I usually keep it quiet because I need to burn up numerous brain cells looking for information.  It just depends.  One thing I do know is that I can be creative because I have my own space to be creative in.  Do you find that you need a designated place to write too?

I worked as a bookkeeper for the largest law firm in Montana several years ago.  I did not have an office per se, I had a sectioned off area of a hallway to work in.  It drove me crazy.  I could not concentrate.  I had all kinds of tedious figures to work with for payroll, billing, etc. and here I was stuck where all the traffic was.  I really struggled with the working conditions.  Come to find out many years later, as an introvert that working situation was intolerable.  I had no idea just how productive and creative I could be until I got my own private place to work in.

I write better

Many thanks to Kat for sponsoring such a great challenge, and many thanks to you for reading and letting me ramble on…

Thanks for stopping by today.  I look forward to seeing you again.

      1. I’m sorry to hear that, Colleen, and I’m thinking maybe it’s because you’re an introvert that you put up with it and were blaming yourself! I know I would’ve been nagging ’til they gave me a better spot lol

  1. A beautiful place for writing and creative work. I totally understand you struggling with your working conditions. I also cannot concentrat and let my creativity flow when everbody is talking around me and making noise.

  2. Space is lovely. Seems that it can be divided into the space for working with analog and digital.
When we would like to create ideas, we prefer the clear spec to ideate without any computers
then we take action through them later.

Space is so important to our creativity.
Sometime we need to change the place to create flow in our mind.

Thank you so much for sharing this post.

  3. I see you have a laptop, Colleen. I’ve never got on with laptops, I don’t think they like me, so I can only do my writing on a desk top. I have, on the odd occasion when my partner is using the desk top and taking far too long over it, used my iPad for writing, and on the odd occasion got something good out of it. If using the iPad it’s usually in the Kitchen, otherwise like you we have a study/creative room.

Your room looks very nice and well kept. Like you, I also like a tidy and organise desk as well 🙂 I can’t work in a mess (me or the room).

    1. Here is how bad I am… I have a lap top but have a keyboard attached to it because I do not like the key structure… I still use a mouse too. So much easier to maneuver. I like the laptop because I can take it with me if I need to. I have a tablet too, but it seems to be slow compared to the laptop. Yes, I am a tidy freak. I cannot stand mess or clutter. It stresses me out. 🙂

      1. Now that all sounds like a very good idea to me, Colleen, and the fact you can take it anywhere you want as well. I’ve heard of some people writing whole posts on their mobile phones. I’ve no idea how they have the patience to do that, with such a small screen and even smaller keyboard and all that.

I’n glad you are a tidy freak. That means when you come to the UK next, and come and visit, you won’t be shocked by our house 🙂

  4. Great posting Silver Threading,

Living in Southwest Florida I travel to many different outdoor and indoor locations providing me a different perspective on writing based on my emotions. Most outside locations face the Gulf Coast of Mexico providing silence and tranquility.

However occasionally birds fly in hoping I’m gong to feed them. LOL!
