Help! I have been spammed with PORN!

My friend Rob, from the V-Pub (which stands for Virtual Pub), recently did a blog makeover. His intent was to create a pub like atmosphere where bloggers could stop in, share a joke, or a story, sometimes even a song, and just enjoy each other’s company.

I promised him that if he changed up his blog, I would write about all the interesting spam that I get in my WordPress messages and link it to his “Tid-bit Tuesday” posts where he talks about some of his interesting life experiences!

Let me begin with saying that the name of my blog is Silver Threading. I share my life as I journey into my retirement years. I am in the over 50 category in lifestyle blogging, so you can imagine my surprise when I started receiving spam that, well uh… made me blush! I am not old, or dead, but WOW!

I am talking about: P O R N! Major porn! Not the blue movies we watched long ago as teenagers, in someone’s dark, smoky basement on shadowy movie screens. No, not that kind at all!

In fact, after serving in the U. S. Air Force I did not think there was too much that could make me blush! WRONG! I feel like the “Church Lady,” from old Saturday Night Live reruns right now telling you all about my spam problems.

What I found particularly funny about the whole spam issue is how it relates to my posts. For example, here is a Haiku that I wrote last summer called, “The Slough.” A slough is another word for a swamp, so I do not know what could prompt the correlation between the two.

As darkness pervades –

frogs croak in deep song.

Life begins anew.

Now, this seems like a nice innocent poem about the swamp not far from where I live, right?

Here are some of the spam reply messages I received in reply to my haiku:

Fresh gay images- gay married men, gay pants, gay firemen, the gay test, mobile gay chat; Porn gay demeanor; Asian porn diary, Freeware gay porn; Porn blog locality: free adult sex, erotic graphic novels, erotic downloads, erotic parties, erotic content; lesbian sex, MILF’s and me, sexy grandmas, and last but not least, Latin she-males!

I think the one that really got me worried was the “erotic downloads.” That just did not sound right at all! Gay pants were interesting too… I wonder what heterosexual pants look like in comparison? To this day, I continue to receive at least 5 to 10 spam messages attached to that post. Go figure?

Then, there was this, juicy tidbit I received recently, as a reply to my Writer’s Quote Wednesday post:

If this post was likened to a flavor of yogurt, what flavor would it be? Banana, I believe.” A link to a porn site accompanied the message. O.K. then, that was interesting… Wasn’t that special?

How about this one? Sometimes I do a Gratitude Sunday post where I talk about the things that I am grateful for in my life. Here is a spam reply I recently received:

Unlock Her Legs by Bobby Rio said: “This is really interesting. You are a very skilled blogger. I have joined your rss feed and look forward to seeking more of your excellent post. Also, I have shared your web site in my social networks!”

Now, you have to admit that this stuff is funny! Although, I was worried that he shared my website in his social networks!

You can imagine my surprise when I received this message from my post called, “Parlor Maple Madness,” which was about a new bush I had planted in my backyard.

clip_image008

I received a ton of spam called, “Hip release porn area, My gay pictures, and Latin She-males.” All these messages had links to where you could visit the sites. Maybe the word “bush,” caught their attention, I do not know. I still cannot figure out what a “hip release porn area is. Maybe that is something for the over 70 crowd with hip replacements. I never did find out.

Sexy grandmas

Actually, I learned a valuable lesson while writing this post. Whatever you do, do not type into Google, “cartoons of porn spam,” when you are looking for photos to add to your post! My laptop immediately imploded!

Oh, and by the way, this post was done with the best of humorous intentions.  I support all life styles by all individuals and my blog remains a safe haven for all individuals… except politicians!  No politics allowed!

  1. You might want to get a good virus program – maybe you have one (Norton isn’t) and make sure you sign out every day. That eliminates some. Unfortunately, you’re now a target and, there will be more. So sorry!!

    1. Janet this is spam that is coming through my WordPress account. I do not receive any emails of this type at all in my email accounts. It just started happening with all of the changes WordPress has implemented. I decided to try and make it a humorous post. 🙂

  2. I haven’t checked my spam folder in a while. At first, I wondered how those things found my posts, but I guess they’re all automated. Along with the Louis Vitton handbag offers I’ve been getting for over 2 years.

    1. That is pretty funny too! It all started for me when WordPress updated their program. I don’t know if that allowed more spam in or what, but it was a good opportunity for a funny post! Hmmmm… A Louis Vitton handbag offer sounds nice. 😀

  3. That was hilarious, Colleen! Gay pants? Hetero pants? You know that I’ll always grin when I watch Squarepants (Spongebob) from now on. I find that the spam finds its way to the high traffic posts on my blog. I don’t know how it finds it, but it does. Your spam is far more interesting than my spam, though. Thanks for posting this, it really made me laugh!

      1. Most of my spam doesn’t even make sense. Sometimes it seems like there are just random words assembled. The last spam that was actually readable was trying to sell LED illuminated toilet seats. I think that they were trying to give me an idea about what to do with my blog! 😀

  4. Colleen, the incredible spam problem! At least you were targeted with a lively topic “made fun” in a blog post! I’ve scanned mine and laughed at some of the disconnected thoughts. Nothing as interesting as yours for sure. Once in a while there’s one legit comment I would have missed. Have a great week. Christine

  5. Colleen, what a hilarious post! Loved it. My WP spam is totally different. Mostly selling SEO consulting, and pirate photos and posts. Very boring! Yours is much more exciting. Kidding you!
I loved the way you synthesized this annoying experience. I’m sorry you became a target!
    Cheers! Keep smiling!!

  6. Haha, that was amazing. I can imagine you swallowing hard at times. I don’t everybody gets such crazy spams to write about….. I don’t! OK, on twitter at times I get some really weird followers which have nothing to do with what I tweet. But I think #love is the keyword. Also those accounts show some interesting details I had never thought they exist (like your gay pants, but even a lot worse sturff). I remember having a hard time deleting all the porn comments on my official German website. They found their way through the security system… Anyway, great post, Colleen. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Oh my lord… that’s so funny! I just checked my spam but so far, nothing. Guess I haven’t been around long enough to generate interest from the spammers. 🙂
As for the gay pants – maybe they have zippers that go all the way round? LOL!

    1. I had to laugh at all the craziness in my spam. I will be blogging 1 year the end of March so, I don’t know if that is it or what. I never got this spam until WordPress updated/changed the program recently. Anyway, it made for a funny post! ❤

  8. LOL. Enjoyed your post. But on the serious side, have you contacted WP about this? Maybe they can shed some light on it. There must be something in the first post this happened to that the search engines picked up. So sorry you have to deal with this. No one likes any kind of spam.

    1. I think everyone get spam to some extent. on Tumblr I had some explicit blog follow me. It is usually kids trying to get a rise out of us. I just ignored it and they went away. It is all deleted by me so no big problem. Just wanted to interject some humor!

    1. I have no idea. I had to ask my kids what some of the abbreviations stood for! LOL! This post was done with the best of humorous intentions. I support all life styles by all individuals and my blog remains a safe haven for all individuals… except politicians! I hope I did not offend anyone, because that was far from my intent. I am not homophobic either. I am just surprised that this spam gets in through WordPress. The key words are there.

  9. Ah spam, it is a curious thing. If you figure out how to hip release your porn area, I’m sure your readers will want to know. And no more imploding computers ST! Practice safe surfing.

    Funny post 😀

  10. Fun post. I’ve always got a lot of spam in the spam folder, just try to get rid of it every so often. At some point it was all about cars. I think it might have to do with number of posts, but unless somebody I know tells me they tried to write a comment and it didn’t go through, I don’ t check spam…

  11. I rarely check my spam folder, so I thought this might be a good time to do so. I found 288 messages from just the past fifteen days. I don’t remember getting that much before, and I believe you might be right about the WP changes. I must way you get more interesting spam than I do. I just get ads for sunglasses and purses, plus very kind compliments on my informative posts. I feel sorry for anyone depending on my posts for information.

  12. I get plenty of spam in the WordPress spam folder as well, Colleen, but nothing like you get. So far nothing to do with porn, but I do get these incredible long messages which take me ages to scroll down to the bottom of so I can delete it.

I’ve also seen quite a few spam messages ending up in the comments section on peoples blogs. That’s why I choose to moderate all comments first before they appear in the comments section. I know it can be a lot of hard work doing that, but I feel much safer doing it that way.

    1. I have the same problem Hugh. Many of my fellow blogger’s comments are ending up in spam. These are people that talk to me all the time too. The porn stuff just started recently and are from my old posts – ever since WordPress updated our program. Who knows. I was quite shocked at some of it. That is why I decided to make it funny and poke fun at the whole idea.<3
