Mindful Monday – Silver’s Healthy Living Journey

Welcome to Mindful Monday! Each week I try to examine new or sometimes old things about myself. I have found that being mindful encompasses the act of being watchful, aware, wary, heedful, alert, careful, or attentive, in whatever area in my life I feel it applies to, as I attempt to live in the present. Come and join me on my journey. You never know what you will learn about yourself.

I have decided to take each Mindful Monday to a more personal level. I want to focus on healthy eating, exercise, and weight loss. This means that I will be sharing tips, recipes, videos, and my own personal journey in the hopes that my struggle will help someone else.

I want to do it publicly because I need to commit to following a plan. I find it hard to disappoint my readers so this motivation will keep me in line, much like when I went to Weight Watchers meetings a few years ago. This also means that I need your support to cheer me on if you will.

The time to start is NOW!

I journal my food using the Weight Watchers Points Plus method daily. My weigh in date is on Saturday. I will report on my weekly results at the end of each post for the previous week. I will not share my starting weight (a girl’s got to have a few secrets) although I will share my weight loss or gain weekly. It is what it is, and I intend on reporting my progress no matter how good or bad.

If you would like to join me in your own healthy living journey, please do. Use whatever program works for you. You do not even have to follow a program if you don’t want to. The whole idea is to start thinking about ways that you can become more healthy and fit. This includes going gluten-free, fat-free, lactose-free, starting an exercise program, or even a new way of eating such as becoming a vegetarian. If it has to do with becoming healthy, write about it!

Link to my post with a ping back each week in a separate post on your own blog. I will add your blog to a list of healthy living supporters that others can visit to gain motivation on each of my Mindful Monday posts. Together we can help each other.

Silver is ready to start making healthy choices again

Now that I have all the personal stuff out of the way, I want to share a few websites that you can use to start your own weight loss journey if you are interested in following Weight Watchers.

The blog, Recipe Diaries
shares Weight Watchers resources for free. You will be able to figure out the number of points you can eat daily by answering a few questions. There are also links to other resources, such as free Points Plus food calculators that you can use to find the points for different foods.

Another blog that I really love is called Simple Nourished Living. She explains the Weight Watchers program and has links to recipes, additional resources, and even exercise and yoga programs that give results. She gears much of her information to the over fifty crowd which is really helpful if you are silver threading like me.

Freckleberry Fit
is another amazing blog that takes you through the process of Weight Watchers journaling, food lists, and exercise tips. She has a printable daily food log here.

I want to share an infographic about a diet specific to folks with thyroid issues. I had Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and a goiter about 8 years ago. After a thyroidectomy, I find it even harder to manage my weight and stay healthy and active. It is imperative that we stay active as we age and if we have extra weight it makes it even harder. Please visit Positive Foodie.com
to find instructions on how to start the Thyroid Diet.

Make sure to visit Weight Loss Aids.com
to learn about zero calorie foods and how they can help you in your journey.

Remember, this is not a challenge.  This is an offering of support and a place where my online community can come to participate in attaining a healthy lifestyle.  If you would like to join in with your own Mindful Monday – Healthy Living goals you can do so in the comments, or on a separate post of your own making.  If you want to link back to my post, please feel free to do so, however, it is not necessary.  My main aim here is to give and get support to become more mindful of my journey to healthy living.

Thank you for joining me for my new journey into healthy living. I am glad you came along for the ride!

  1. Such a good idea to join forces with everyone who needs to get healthier!
Thinking of something similar, as I’m one of those people where nothing seems to work. Linking up is a good idea too, as that way we might help more people…
BTW… where did you get your fabulous background image?

  2. Great post, Colleen! An extra reminder that I need Roget myself back on track, too. It isn’t easy with the holidays and the colder weather but the longer one puts it off the harder it is to get back on the old wagon! Have a great week 😉

  5. Good luck, Colleen. I’ve always had to be careful with what I eat. Luckily I like fruit and vegetables and exercising, but still, my metabolism isn’t very fast and spending so many hours at the computer doesn’t help.

    • I so agree. I think if we all celebrate/commiserate together it will be a great way for all of us to stay on task. I have stairs now and I remember you saying how you climbed your stairs for exercise. My house is big. It took me 40 minutes to complete the hoovering upstairs and downstairs. I think it is a great way to get exercise. I hope you will share your wisdom about yoga and such. ❤

    • Martha, thank you so much! I was excited to find your blog and hope you won’t mind many links to your fabulous writings. We have such a great community here on WordPress that I know they will find inspiration from your recipes and your yoga. I love how your yoga is geared toward older women. That is fabulous. If you ever would like to do a guest blog about yoga on Silver Threading please let me know! I subscribed to your blog by email so I shall be on this journey with you at my side. Thank you again. Namaste ❤

  6. Looking forward to walking the path with you! I have done Nutrisystem twice – the second time was harder but I’ve got my weight down about 20 lbs from where I was for years.
Right now I want to see if I can survive the holidays without gaining. I’m hitting the gym several times a week and managing portions and sweets. It ain’t easy, especially as you get older!

  7. Colleen, thank you for sharing your journey with us! I found your post full of helpful information to get me back on track, especially after Thanksgiving ! I liked learning about the Zero Calorie foods too! Who knew?
I’m here to support you every step of the way in your journey and look forward to your updates:)
Have a great start to your day !
    With love and friendship ,

  8. Good for you! I find food is labelled horribly here in Ireland. Often in ingredients there is ‘flavouring’. That’s it, no real info. And calories, forget it. Best of luck to you. Brilliant to start this adventure with a supportive community, great idea!

  9. I’ve really missed your Mindful Monday posts and this is fantastic. I feel the positive energy blasting through the computer screen. I’ve always struggled with my weight. The thing that works best for me is Slimming World because I get to eat as much as I want (of the stuff which is sin (syn) free!) I’ve been off the healthy eating for a while, but am determined to get back to it. Exercise too. It’s good to know there’s a safe place to discuss my endeavours ❤
