Mindful Monday – Healthy Living: Food Journals & Breakfast the Silver Way

Welcome to Mindful Monday – Healthy Living! Each week I try to examine new or sometimes old things about myself on my journey to becoming healthier. I have found that being mindful encompasses the act of being watchful, aware, wary, heedful, alert, careful, or attentive, in whatever area in my life I feel it applies to, as I attempt to live in the present. Come and join me on my journey. You never know what you will learn about yourself.

…to all of you who have cheered me on and are interested in accompanying me on this journey to healthy living! Together, we can offer support and ideas to make this road to “healthy,” a fun journey!

This week I had help from:

A Momma’s View

The Bee Writes

From World’s Kitchen

I hope that you will support them in their healthy living journey by visiting their blog and leaving a word of encouragement. In addition, the comments that I receive from many of my blogging friends mean the world to me. Thank you! ❤

Week 2

I had another successful weight loss week with a 1.8 lb. loss. I am happy with my progress so far. Once again I must say it is the fact that I write down everything that goes into my mouth as being one of the things that really helps me to stay aware of what I am doing. If you bite it, you must write it!

I made my own food journal from one of the weekly Weight Watcher’s free food journals they hand out at meetings. It is a cut and tape job that I copy each week and log in the information as I go. It has a place where you can keep track of your fruits and vegetables, dairy, and liquid intake. This one thing alone makes me feel in control of my eating habits.

Seasons of a Homemaker
has a great printable log that you can get for free and fill in by hand.

Did you know that people who track their daily food intake lose more weight? WebMD
reveals in their article, “Wondering how to keep a food journal? Here are 8 tips for making a food diary work for you,” the secret to achieving your weight loss goals.

Here is an online calorie tracker from calories count.com
that you can use. It gives you the caloric values of many foods and makes it easy for you to add additional foods to your food dictionary.

Keeping track of what you put in your mouth really makes you aware of what you are eating. It is the same idea with portion control. If you do not realize how much you are really eating how can you attack the problem? I was shocked when I first starting writing down my food choices and how much I was eating.

Exercise?

Now, I promised I would tell you the good, the bad, and the ugly! I did not exercise much this week. I only walked the dogs once, even though I had wanted to do more. I was busy with eye doctor visits, grocery store visits, vet visits, etc. In other words, this has really been a busy time of year!

Silver needs to work out more often!

Christmas also has the most irresistible foods and deserts that we must contend with. My husband will actually hide his sweets. That works for me. If I see his treats, I want to eat them. If I don’t see them… no worries! I don’t even want sweets. I must be on a “see-food” want to eat diet!

My first trial… I made Ron chocolate chip walnut cookies this week. It was incredibly hard, but I was really good. Each cookie was worth 3 bites. I had two cookies this week. That means 3 Points Plus Point values per cookie = 6 points! That is almost the Points Plus values of a meal! (By the way, the cookies tasted fabulous with 80 calorie Toasted Coconut flavored Greek Yogurt).

My best friend, Annie, sent me a Downton Abbey tea collection that is out of this world. There is one particular tea that has saved me! The Crawley Sister’s Strawberry Chocolate is to die for. I felt like I was indulging in a rich dessert! That is the mind-game I have to play with myself. I try to find low to zero calorie ways to fill me up. Teas are a great way to deal with a sweet tooth. I use Stevia as my sweetener.

Breakfast anyone?

I do not need to tell you the benefits of eating breakfast. This is the first meal of the day and I have found that I cannot go without it!

I love old-fashioned oatmeal! I eat oatmeal every other day. I take a half cup of oatmeal and add fruit, 1 cup of water, and lots of cinnamon! I have been using cranberries because they are easy to find in the stores right now. Add a pear, an apple, or fruit of your choice and you have the fuel to keep your body going till lunch!

Cranberry-grape oatmeal!

On my opposite day, for breakfast, I eat a ¾ cup of Egg Beaters with veggies. Here is a link to my post called, “A garden breakfast.” Share with me what you eat for breakfast so we can exchange ideas.

All in all, my week 2 was great. My weight loss is where it should be, around 2 pounds a week. In the last two weeks, I have lost a total of 6.8 lbs. I’ll take that. I feel empowered and want to succeed.

My biggest goal is to increase my exercise this week. The dogs need it and I know I do!

Happy Holidays. I hope you will join me in a cup of CHEER!

How was your second week on your healthy living journey?

If you would like to join me in your own healthy living journey, please do. Use whatever program works for you. You do not even have to follow a program if you don’t want to. The whole idea is to start thinking about ways that you can become healthier and fit. This includes going gluten-free, fat-free, lactose-free, starting an exercise program, or even a new way of eating such as becoming a vegetarian. If it has to do with becoming healthy, write about it!

Link to my post with a ping back each week in a separate post on your own blog. I will add your blog to a list of healthy living supporters that others can visit to gain motivation on each of my Mindful Monday posts. Together we can become healthier!

Remember, this is not a challenge.  This is an offering of support and a place where my online community can come to participate in attaining a healthy lifestyle.  If you would like to join in with your own Mindful Monday – Healthy Living goals you can do so in the comments, or on a separate post of your own making.  If you want to link back to my post, please feel free to do so, however, it is not necessary.  My main aim here is to give and get support to become more mindful of my journey to healthy living.

Thanks for being part of my fabulous journey to a healthy lifestyle. Don’t forget to add your post and share your journey. ❤

  2. I love breakfast, oatmeal is a favorite. I freeze berries and use them all year long in it, also with lots of cinnamon. I also use a lot of avocado and tomato with a single scrambled egg. It doesn’t sound like much, but is very satisfying.
Number 14 is the hardest for me. My husband has a bit of a sweet tooth, and goes looking for treats all the time, so I keep them around. I try to avoid the stuff I love, and that seems to help.
Love green tea, but also discovered white tea, very mild flavor from young green leaves.
Your Monday posts are so motivational and include great info, Colleen. Keep them coming !!
