Editing is my LIFE!

My life consists of reading and writing, and re-writing words in the hopes of publishing my novel by this autumn…

If you don’t see me around much, that is why. Writing is a journey…

I did find some great editing tips, and I have shared them below:

  1. Thanks for the shout out. Also, your tips are excellent. You can also set Word to give you an analysis of your writing (grade level, passive sentences, and readability) after you do a spelling/grammar check.

  2. Writing is fun. Editing is expensive. When I first started blogging, I looked through posts from “experts” giving advice about editing. Among the gems (or should I say “turds”): Avoid are/be/am/could/would/were/is and use “ing” words instead. Avoid the words “suddenly” and “realize.” Avoid contractions.

So I went through my books to cut out all the “bad” things, taking as much of their advice to heart as possible. It looked and felt contrived. My editor confirmed my suspicions by repeatedly asking why I wasn’t using are/be/am/could/would/were/is. She used the word “clunky.” to describe the resulting travesty.

I’ve noted one constant in the advice given to writers: Avoid the words “very” and “really.”

Here is the advice I’d give to new writers: Enjoy writing your book, and find a reliable editor. Let her do be the slicer, dicer, and punctuation police. A good editor is expensive but worth her weight in gold.
