Norah Colvin writes in the upcoming The Congress of Rough Writers Flash Fiction Anthology, Vol. 1:

“Flash fiction is a form of short writing. In its various forms, it may be known as, for example, micro fiction, sudden fiction, or six-word stories; the length may vary from as few as six to as many as 1,000 words. Brevity is a constraint, and writers attempt to pack as much story as they can into few words. Each word must count. There is no room for ‘darlings’, let alone a need for them to be killed.”

Carrot Ranch is hosting a Flash Fiction Rodeo with eight different contests throughout the month of October. It’s free and includes first place prizes in each category of $25. 1. Thank you for sharing, Colleen! I’m so excited for the Rodeo! Each contest challenge writers to use different skills. Best of all, it’s good people who are leading each event. They will make each one fun!

    1. I am selfishly using the challenges to write some longer stories which I can then edit down. This was a first for me but I printed out the dates and requirements so I have the instructions handy. To say I am excited… that’s an understatement. This will be a blast. Hugs! ❤

      1. I’m thrilled to hear you are doing that, Colleen! Flash fiction is a fun prompt and many take writing the form seriously. Yet, I love it most for being a useful writer’s tool. I write historical fiction and have mounds of research to sift through and humanize. Flash fiction lets me play with my characters, exploring motives and contradictory actions in a way that novel writing doesn’t. It’s really enhanced my WIPS. I always start long and go short. Use the TUFF for working on stories, too. It will train you to think strategically even when you are writing creatively! I’m so excited, too! Hugs back!.
