IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:
While researching the cause of beehive demise across the country, Javier stumbles onto a breakthrough—a virus carried by bugs that insecticides can’t eradicate. The discovery explains a string of illnesses and deaths, and it means a vaccine is possible. But instead of his achievement being celebrated, his bosses try to kill him.
After evading capture, Javier meets Liz, a widow who works at a homeless shelter. Together, they become fugitives, and in searching for a vaccine, they discover an intricate chain of secrets that lead to the most powerful entities in the country.
Now, to break the chain and free the people, Javier and Liz must fight an impossible battle. While winning means relief from decades of manipulation and oppression, losing would result in more deaths than the virus ever threatened.
“This standalone sequel to The Fourth Descendant is absolutely gripping from the opening words. Fast-paced and intense, it is an amazing story ripped from today’s headlines by way of the brilliant imagination of Allison Maruska. If you liked The Fourth Descendant, you will love The Seventh Seed.” ~Dan Alatorre, author of An Angel On Her Shoulder~
*I was given an ARC of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review which follows*
As if ripped from our present-day news cycle, The Seventh Seed is a novel filled with political intrigue and the manipulation of a futuristic government entity called LifeFarm.
Take a moment and think about the consequences for humanity if the world’s food supply was controlled by a single corporation. The opportunity for the oppression of regular people in the face of greed would be unprecedented. No one would be immune. Even the scientists would be under scrutiny.
So, when a young scientist named Javier, part of the team researching the beehive collapse across the world uncovers a virus carried by bugs that appear to be resistant to insecticides, you would assume this would be cause for celebration. However, LifeFarm doesn’t want the information on the virus or the vaccine to get out. Instead, Javier becomes a target, and his life is on the line.
The virus spreads and leads to the deaths of many. For Javier, the virus means that the possibility of developing a vaccine which would cure the sick now. With that purpose in mind, Javier sets off to develop a cure.
Hang on to your seat, because this book takes off in a whirlwind of drama and intrigue that doesn’t end until you read the last page. The Seventh Seed is a sequel to Maruska’s, The Fourth Descendent, but could stand alone as details from the first novel are skillfully intertwined into the second book. I loved the high-octane action, and the political conspiracy was well thought out.
There are a couple twists in this book I never saw coming which are always a pleasant surprise. If you love fast-paced mysteries filled with suspense, you’re going to love this book. I couldn’t put it down!
