“Tower Carillons” A Tanka, #SynonymsOnly

Hello! The challenge words this week for Colleen’s Tanka Tuesday Poetry Challenge were “bells and past.” I had a vision of Ebenezer Scrooge in my head that I haven’t been able to shake. Scrooge is my favorite Christmas movie, and I love the theme and lesson.

I’ve been trying to figure out ways to challenge the participants because you’ve all gotten so darn good! I’ve continued on the theme that you can’t use the prompt words except to find synonyms to use in their stead. Fun? I hope so. It sure made me think and choose my words differently.

From what I’ve read, the challenge poetry this week is much more expressive when the poet controls the choice of words. I’ve also sensed the alliteration has changed in your poetry. Bravo, poets. You’ve done well. Synonyms are your friends.

Where does that leave me? Scrambling to keep up with your creativity! In keeping with the Scrooge theme, I’ve written a Tanka that reminded me when I was a child and how the bells tolled on Christmas morning.

Tower carillons –

A bygone call to worship,

required attendance.

Our penance for waywardness,

some lessons learned the hard way.
