The harsh winds of January howl through the community. My neighbor’s wind chimes sound the alarm. Trees shiver off a layer of hoarfrost from the freezing rain that fell the night before. Reflective shards that look like broken glass litter the slushy street. Juncos flit through the branches of the Bradford Pear trees, devouring the remains of the shriveled fruit.

blue sky greets the day
promise soars on winter's wings
a new year arrives
