COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “The Balad of Mrs. Molony,” BY AUTHOR, C. S. BOYACK, @VIRGILANTE

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

About this Book

Lizzie and the hat are back, and this time they’re chasing vampires across a subculture of America. A pair of rodeo cowboys are holding a woman captive to use like a milk cow since they joined the undead.

The person who put them onto the trail is also a vampire, but he has to be the worst vampire in history. Is he really that pitiful, or is he setting a trap for our heroes? Does the woman even exist? Can Lizzie and the hat find her before she also takes up bloodsucking?

Follow Lizzie and the hat as they use their cover band to stalk vamps across the country music scene.

MY RECOMMENDATION:

Lizzie and the Hat are back in another high octane action-adventure! This time, the pair and their band have infiltrated the country-western music scene in search of a group of vampires who’ve captured a young woman to satisfy their thirst for blood.

The missing girl’s brother approaches Lizzie and the Hat asking for help because his sister is missing… there’s only one problem. He’s a vampire! To make matters worse; he has an uncontrollable lisp, pronouncing his name as Kuvun (Kevin). The Hat is ready to stake the poor guy because, well, you know, they kill vamps. But Lizzie is kindhearted. She wants to help save Kevin’s sister from the blood thirsty vamps.

Now, I know what you’re thinking… what’s wrong with being a vampire? Right?

Well, there’s a lot wrong with being a vampire. A quick trip back to the cabin leads the musical duo to Lizzie’s ancestors’ unique stash of “monster busting” equipment. The Hat explains the mystique behind Mrs. Molony and how to use it since silver bullets won’t kill a monster. To kill a monster, you either have to behead them, burn them, or stake them! Now, Lizzie and the Hat are ready for anything! Or are they?

Lizzie, the Hat, and their band jump into the county music scene hanging out with the cowboy crowd at the rodeo where the vampires that took Kevin’s sister were last seen. There’s plenty of hilarious banter between Lizzie and the Hat to keep you chuckling long into the night. The race is on to save Kevin’s sister before it’s too late.

Boyack’s strengths lay in his smooth storytelling and the dialogue between the characters. In the age of Marvel Comics, everyone loves a talented team, and Lizzie and the Hat are hilarious together. I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with next.

If you’re looking for a fun Halloween read… Check out “Mrs. Molony,” and “Viral Blues,” and “The Hat!” They’re better than trick or treat!

About the Author

I was born in a town called Elko, Nevada. I like to tell everyone I was born in a small town in the 1940s. I’m not quite that old, but Elko has always been a little behind the times. This gives me a unique perspective of earlier times, and other ways of getting by. Some of this bleeds through into my fiction.

I moved to Idaho right after the turn of the century and never looked back. My writing career was born here, with access to other writers and critique groups I jumped in with both feet.

I like to write about things that have something unusual. My works are in the realm of science fiction, paranormal, and fantasy. The goal is to entertain you for a few hours. I hope you enjoy the ride.

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “The Jailbird’s Jackpot (Faith, Family, Frenzy! Book 4),” BY AUTHOR, P J Colando

When Amy’s longtime nemesis invades her haven, her ire ignites. She becomes more determined than ever to avenge herself.

The aging crime boss enjoins her mission. Victory is finalized when she’s able to buy her mortal enemy’s thriving bar in a fire sale… and becomes the Boss. But is that enough? MY RECOMMENDATION:

Steve and Jacquie are the perfect Midwest farm couple. You sense their love for one another with each turn of the page. In Book One, called “Stashes,” Jackie and Steve Breeden, your average hard-working, dairy farming, salt of the earth type folks who live on a rural farm in Michigan. Their son Brandon and his wife, Amy, hatch a scheme to expand the Breeden’s micro dairy business by growing and selling marijuana edibles with hilarious results.

Book Two is called, “Hashes & Bashes.” When Carl, who is Steve’s brother from his mother’s WWII love tryst who had been given up for adoption, suddenly arrives on the scene, the Breeden family welcomes him into their nest. The author introduces many new characters in this book, and you’ll laugh and cry at the same time.

By book three, “The Winner’s Circle,” you wonder what could happen next. How about throwing some lotto winnings into the mix? Jacquie’s friend, Bonnie, has fallen in love with Steve’s brother, Carl. When Bonnie hits it big with a lotto win, their relationship is changed in ways they never imagined. And that’s just the beginning! The four friends embark on a journey of discovery which leads them to some startling revelations about each other and how they view themselves.

Now, we arrive at book four, “The Jailbird’s Jackpot,” which gives a voice to Amy Breeden after she’s released from prison for embezzling funds from the local bank.

And what a story Amy has to tell. I felt like she got more blame than she probably deserved, but her early release from prison sets up the story unexpectedly. Guess who also strikes it big in the lottery? You got it… the parolee ends up stinking rich!

Amy finds herself with more money than she knows what to do with… Add in a crazy friend, an unstable brother, and a drill sergeant parole officer, along with a host of other memorable characters, and you’ve got the setting for a story that you won’t be able to put down! I never saw the ending coming!

There’s plenty of unexpected twists and turns as Amy learns how to deal with her newfound wealth. Yet, this story reminds me of the hero’s journey as Amy learns more about herself as she deals with unexpected circumstances. If you love powerful women characters, Amy Breeden just might teach you a thing or two!

Many thanks to the author for providing me with a pre-release copy of the book. I’ve read and enjoyed the entire “Faith, Family, Frenzy” Series by PJ Colando. Find my book reviews for the other books below:

About the Author:

I was born and raised in the Midwest, yet unabashedly aspired for adventure elsewhere, following my parents’ model.

I live in southern California, where seasons seldom matter, where any promise can be conjured and fulfilled. I write while my husband watches TV sports, which are always in season = often.

I wrote a series titled Faith, Family, Frenzy! about the small town & rural Midwest. I know the characters and settings very well and my fertile imagination creates the plots. None of the escapades I create have happened to anyone anywhere, not even me.

Perhaps my series is a form of memoir…

I write humor and satire with a literary bent. Besides the four novels, I’ve published two short story anthologies and have a third in mind… I’m available to speak to your group or book club. I’m eager to engage with other writers and readers of my books.

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “Viking Sagas, The Captivating Tale of Ragnar Lothbrok, Ivar the Boneless, Lagertha, and More, in Their Historical Context” BY AUTHOR, Matt Clayton, @CaptivHistory

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

About this Book

Explore Captivating Viking Sagas

The period between the end of the eighth century CE and the middle of the eleventh is often called the “Viking Age” because this is the period in which Scandinavian people expanded their contacts with the outside world through trade, raiding, exploration, and colonization.

This volume presents a version of Ragnar’s saga compiled from different modern sources, along with information providing additional historical and documentary context, followed by a discussion of some aspects of modern appropriations and representations of ancient Norse culture.

The first section of the book provides a historical context for Ragnar’s saga through an exploration of daily life in ninth-century Scandinavia and of contemporary Viking culture and history.

The text of the saga itself forms the second part of the book, along with notes giving further information about how this version of the saga is presented and about elements within the story that might not be familiar to modern readers.

The third section of the book deals with representations of ancient Norse cultures in modern popular media.

Within this book, you’ll find the following the Viking Sagas and topics covered:

  • The World of Ragnar Lothbrok
  • The Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and His Sons
  • Representations of Norse Myths and History in Modern Media
  • The Clash of History and Drama in the History Channel Television Series Vikings
  • And much more!

MY RECOMMENDATION

I received this book as an offer from Captivating History.com. I reviewed, because for me, Viking and Celtic mythology makes for some interesting reading. Add in the popular television series, “Vikings” and you’ve got a recipe for success.

This is not your typical history book, although there are many citations to back up this author’s references. The style of writing is clear and concise, and easy to understand. There are detailed descriptions of Viking culture, many gleaned from recent archaeological evidence.

I found the “shield maiden,” research to be most interesting. This female Viking, who lived and died around the year 900, was first excavated from a farm in Solør, Norway, in 1900. Recent discoveries reveal that she was a woman, overturning the centuries-old assumption that Viking warriors were only men.

The author deciphers many of the myths surrounding the television series, “The Vikings.” There was a man named Ragnar in the ancient texts who could have been the character in the series. The series has done a decent job in my estimation of showing Viking culture. Even more interesting to me was how many of the Norse myths found their way into the show. Read the ancient myths included in the book. The Norse were superb storytellers.

I also found the connection to a magic sword and the slaying of a dragon from the ancient Norse myths could have been the basis for the King Arthur myths. This is only my speculation and not collaborated with research. I think these older myths found their way into Celtic society repurposed to fit the needs of the time.

As a poet, the information relating to the Norse and Icelandic Skalds, (poets) caught my attention. Skalds were the poets of the Vikings, and poetry and storytelling were the most-prized art forms in Norse culture. Poetry was a gift from Odin, the Allfather chief god of the Vikings, and just being a skald with the ability to speak in rhyme also was a way to distinguish themselves as having a connection to Odin.

If you love Norse mythology and want to find out the factual truth behind the “Vikings” television series, this book will shed some light on the truth of the matter. It was a fabulous read!

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “The Sincerest Form of Poetry,” BY AUTHOR, Geoff Le Pard, @geofflepard

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

About this Book

An anthology of poems, inspired by the top 100 British poems and a love of sonnets.

Amazon.com

All of life in one easy couplet

“To write poetry, I need inspiration. Often that comes from my appreciation of the craftsmanship of other, better poets, whose skills I aspire to emulate. For this anthology, I have chosen two such sources: in part one, the search for Britain’s favourite poem led to the publication of the top 100, and I have used a number of these to craft my own take on those beautiful and inspirational works; in part two, my love of the sonnet form, fostered by reading Shakespeare’s gems, has provided a selection covering many topics and themes. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed creating them.”

~ Geoff Le Pard

Amazon.co.uk

MY RECOMMENDATION

Geoff Le Pard is one of my favorite contemporary poets. His acerbic wit makes me laugh, and there are no out-of-bounds topics in his repertoire of verses. Some of his poetry is raw, exposing the trials and tribulations related to the everyday grind of being human. Many of his poems explore the irony of our daily circumstances with an emphasis on humor—always ready to make you smile, or possibly blush!

Le Pard has a style all his own, and he writes a form of ‘found poetry’ with inspiration from many of my favorite British poets: Shakespeare, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Rudyard Kipling, Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Wordsworth, Dylan Thomas, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, W.B. Yeats, and many others. Le Pard uses the first line of the actual poem as they wrote it, continuing on with his own poetic genius.

The second half of the book the author explores the sonnet, with poems comprising fourteen lines with an iambic rhyming scheme. This is where he truly shines. They say all poets have a favorite form they like to write and clearly; the sonnet speaks to this author.

He shares in the Genesis section of the book:

In 2007, I was taken with the urge to write poetry. From where that emerged, I will have to leave to psychologists, though some have noticed my father’s death (he wrote delightful poetry) occurred some eighteen months before I found the courage to commit myself to the ether. I found, almost immediately that, unlike prose, poetry is a more intense and challenging medium to embrace. It needs, above all else, a depth of inspiration that a short story or even a novel does not demand. It has been my joy and challenge to find and hold on to such inspiration.”

Geoff Le Pard, The Sincerest From of Poetry

I read this book in two nights, sometimes shaking the bed in quiet laughter to not disturb my sleeping spouse. This was a delightful read and the perfect gift for the poetry lover in your family. Many thanks to the author for gifting me an advance reader’s copy. This book will release on September 30, 2020.

I’ll share one of my favorite selections from the book:

Trick Or Treat

The box full of treats draws them in like flies
Glassy-eyed children with hands reaching down.
‘It’s rubbish chocolate,’ says John with a frown.
‘Never mind,’ says his mum, wiping her eyes
On her sleeve. ‘Sue Witch is good for a treat.
You’ll see. Candies and fudge, all neatly wrapped.
Though take care or you’re sure to be trapped
In her sticky web. She’s best in the street
For her tricks.’ They hold hands as they hurry
Along. Nervously waiting for their next gift.
The mood will change: there’s always a shift
As cockroaches cackle and dirty rats scurry.
For what do you expect on Halloween?
It starts with a smile, and ends with a scream.

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “Jack Hughes & Thomas the Rhymer, Book One” BY AUTHOR, Paul Andruss, @Paul_JHBooks

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

About this Book

Fairies took his brother…

When Jack sees a sinister woman kidnap his bother Dan, he knows his parents will never believe him. Nor will the police. Not when he says Dan vanished into thin air. If Jack wants to see Dan again, he has to save him. And not just him …

If he ever wants to find Dan, first he must save Thomas the Rhymer from a wicked enemy.

Bravely embarking on a rollercoaster adventure into the dark fairy realm, Jack and friends face monstrous griffins and brooding tapestries with a life of their own, learn to use magic mirrors and travel on ley lines that whip them off faster than sound

Even if he returns Thomas the Rhymer to his selfish fairy queen, she might make Jack her prisoner. With the odds stacked against him, can Jack succeed in finding and freeing Dan?

Or will he lose his brother forever?

MY RECOMMENDATION

The trilogy’s written, so I’ve reread “Jack Hughes and Thomas the Rhymer,” to reconnect with the characters. Stay tuned, because I’ll be reviewing the other two books soon. Now, forget everything you thought you knew about faeries!

This fantastic story delves into one of my favorite subjects, faeries! Not only was it geared toward the YA genre, but it also included a fair amount of historical facts to make the story shine. Those historic details make this book unforgettable.

When Jack’s older brother Dan disappears before his very eyes, he’s stunned by the mysterious circumstances of his departure. That Jack witnessed the strange abduction and doesn’t tell his parents only adds to his troubles. Jack’s mother is suffering from a chronic illness and his greatest hope is that the situation will rectify itself, and Dan will come home on his own.

One night, Jack receives a cell phone call from Dan, and when he answers, there’s no one on the line. He tries to tell his parents and the police the truth about what happened, but every time he opens his mouth to speak, his throat closes up and he’s unable to utter a single word. Faery glamours? Could be!

In the meantime, Jack notices a dirty tramp hanging around his house who only speaks in rhyme. It becomes apparent that no one can see the tramp but Jack and his friends, so he enlists them to help him solve the mystery behind his brother’s disappearance.

Jack, Ken, and Catherine become entangled in the magical kingdom of the faeries. They learn about traveling by ley lines on faery roads. They also experience firsthand the deterioration of the faery kingdom. At one point, Catherine disappears into a living faery tapestry. Soon, the truth about the land of faery is revealed to the kids. Believe me, there’s plenty of magic and suspense to keep you reading long into the night! At least, I did!

Let me just say that this is one of the most imaginative books I have ever read about the good neighbors. There are some special scenes involving one of the faery queen’s and the female character, Catherine, that captured my imagination! The author’s attention to detail and the world-building in faeryland is worth drawing your attention to. Andruss writes as if he has first-hand knowledge of how to deal with faery royalty!

Jack’s friends are reminiscent of the characters in the Harry Potter series, and I had no problem connecting with their personalities. The plot is brilliant, although I had a hard time separating fact from fiction. That’s what I call good writing!

You will find this book on Amazon.com and soon to be listed (along with the sequels) with the independent Scottish publisher, Black Wolf Books. You will find a delightful musical rendering of characters and places from the book HERE. I’ve included my favorite for your reading pleasure below featuring the mysterious Elphame Wood.

Elphame Wood.mp3

“Elphame Wood—speaks for itself, really. The dissonant chords and drum-beats are interrupted by fanfares to remind you that you are in Queen Sylvie’s kingdom. In the first chapter, Sylvie calls Jack ‘Frere Jacques’ and her rhyme has the same syllable scheme as the song. I used an incomplete, minor-key version of Frere Jacques as a recurring bass theme to add to the sinister mood.”

Music  for Jack Hughes & Thomas the Rhymer, by Patrick Hartnett

I think children and adults of all ages will enjoy this magical tale. Do you love magic and all things faery? Then have a read, because this book will keep you entertained for hours.

About the Author

Paul Andruss was born and raised in Liverpool. The city’s legendary Scouse wit and dogged stoicism left its mark. Keen to get out into the world, Paul dropped out of college at 17. A year later he was taking exams at Night School, while working in the local Tax Office. On the grounds that anything was better than work, he applied to study Psychology at Liverpool University. Considering his grades (just plumb lazy) no one was more surprised than he when they accepted his application.

After graduation, Paul worked near the romantic Lake District, so beloved of William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. No, not Harry’s mum, Peter Rabbit, and Jemima Puddle-duck’s. He worked in Manchester and London before moving to Bodrum in Turkey.

To finance a passion for exploring the heartland of the Ancient Greek Empire, Paul wrote short travel articles focusing on the history and myths of ruined cities and temples. He began illustrating the pieces, using Photoshop to remove power lines and the odd Esso sign from his photographs of ancient sites.

Returning to the U.K. to focus on writing and illustration, he settled in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons. Paul is the author of the Young Adult magical realism trilogy, the Jack Hughes Books, and the forthcoming (very adult) Finn Mac Cool – a gritty, raunchy mythological saga. He has also written a number of short stories and novellas. All scheduled for release with exciting new, independent Scottish publisher, Black Wolf Books.

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “This is Lockdown” BY AUTHOR, Marjorie Mallon, along with other authors, @Marjorie_Mallon

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

About this Book

“A Piece of Living History!”

This anthology and compilation is for everyone wherever you live in the world. We are all experiencing the impact of COVID19 and lockdown. As writers, bloggers and creatives we express our thoughts and opinions in writing: in heartfelt poetry, pieces on isolation and the impact of COVID19 and the ‘new normal.’ There are twenty-eight talented contributors, including the creative NHS Mask Making Fundraising Team of Jane Horwood and Melissa Santiago Val. The contributors come from as far afield as Australia, Canada, USA and Zimbabwe, or closer to my current home in England – in Ireland, Scotland and Italy.

It is as Willow Willers, a contributor said, ‘A piece of living history.’

This extraordinary and unexpected time period will be shared with future generations one day.

Compiling and editing this anthology has given me a purpose over the period of Lockdown and for that I am grateful.

It is an anthology and compilation of diaries, short stories, poetry and flash fiction set during extraordinary times. This Is Lockdown is written from many perspectives, including a writer’s perspective highlighting the day-to-day life and struggles experienced during such an uncertain and frightening time. It also gives a glimpse into the blogging, writing world. The book showcases several authors and their thoughts on what it is like to experience ‘isolation’ as a writer. I discuss the handling of the pandemic and my opinion about what might happen next. In the final part of the book I share my latest short story: a YA romance set post lockdown along with poetry, and flash fiction inspired by the pandemic.

Goodreads Quotes:

“When people look back on the events of 2020, books like this will assume a great importance. They will remind us of all the little things that we took for granted and were suddenly gone.”

“MJ Mallon begins this heartening book with a stunning foreword to mark the times that are sure to become part of a testament of our times in history on the 2020 global pandemic Covid19 that has rocked our collective world.”

“I was fortunate to have an opportunity to read an early copy of this book and was delighted to see the author putting this collection out into the world. A highly recommended read that I imagine readers of the future looking to”’

“’It’s a privilege to be a small part of this book as one of the ‘isolation writers.’ It feels like contributing to a little piece of history for the future. Fascinating to read all the thoughts and musings and feel that none of us were ever really alone.”

MY RECOMMENDATION

M J Mallon has outdone herself by writing a memoir of her time in lockdown in England while the Covid-19 Virus held the rest of the world hostage (and still does). Partially written in the form of a diary and called the “COVID 19 diaries,” Mallon shares the daily activities of her family during the crises. She doesn’t sugarcoat their concern for the safety of their family—she tells it like it is.

In a historical context, Mallon also shares the U. K. numbers of those infected and those who have succumbed to this terrible disease, along with a few political opinions of her own. There is a poignancy to her words that touches us all no matter where we live, as we stand united in fear against a little-understood disease.

“We are all in this together,” truly becomes the mantra for the collection as the book expands to include an extraordinary collection of writers from the author’s writing community, who also share how the virus changed their lives. The honesty and sincerity of these authors deeply touched me. I connected to their experiences because as an empathic writer, I shared many of the same feelings, doubts, and concerns.

The second half of the collection features short stories, flash fiction and poetry written by the author during this troublesome time.

In the years to come, I hope the author’s story, “Stay at Home,” serves as a testament to the unusual times we lived through. The story carries a “family-trigger warning” as it portrays one man’s struggle to survive the virus. Its truth is as haunting as the rest of the book.

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “WitchWood Estates Collectibles, Book 1: The Witches Journal,” BY AUTHOR, Patti Roberts, @PattiRoberts7

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

ABOUT THIS BOOK

“A fun little book to help you find your inner witch. Recipes, spells, birthstones, witchcraft terminology, candles, flowers, poetry, broom history, animal familiars, tea leaf reading, and more.

In fairy-tales of long ago, witches dressed in flowing black gowns, wore pointy hats, and flew around on broomsticks at night. By the light of the silvery moon, they would steal little children from their beds…

I’m sure some still do, but know this – not all witches have pointy noses, warts and eat small children. Some are just ordinary people, men, and women, who happen to believe there is magic in this world. The Witches’ Journal (book 1) is a fun collection of lots of all things magical from a coven of whimsical folk. We hope you enjoy the words and pictures contained within these pages. Blessed are those who carry kindness and love in their hearts, for they shall always have magic in their lives!”

I believe, so mote it be.

MY RECOMMENDATION

The Witches Journal is a lovely and entertaining collection of witchy recipes, spells, and poems contributed by readers. Even better, this is a FREE book! The book begins with “The Must Have Witch List,” including the moral code:

Many witches abide by a moral code—The Witches’ Rede. “An it harm none, do what ye will.” It simply means, as long as you do no harm to others, no harm shall be done to you. And – The Rule of Three or Three-fold Law, the Law of Return. The rule states that whatever energy a person puts out into the world, be it positive or negative, will be returned to that person times three. So be wise witches, young and old. Be kind, and always follow your heart.

Roberts, Patti. The Witches’ Journal: Recipes, spells, poems, tea leaves, candles, familiars, and more… (Witchwood Estate Collectables Book 1) . Paradox Book Cover-Formatting. Kindle Edition.

Following this charming introduction, the reader discovers recipes, quotations, bits of poetry from Shakespeare and other memorable names, including interesting facts about herbs, crystals, and magick. This is the perfect book for that special person in your life.

Some recipes have an old world appeal, while others tackle Paleo, Vegan, and Gluten-Free diets. I was surprised by the selection. “Nina’s Bloody Tarts,” sounds like the perfect Samhain treat. Halloween’s just around the corner, and “Chocolate Covered Mice” are sure to conjure up some smiles. The section featuring special brewed “teas” also caught my attention.

There’s a fabulous selection of free-style poetry, all written with a pagan twist including a section of spells and chants. I also loved the history of “brooms,” and Celtic Tree Astrology. Seriously… there is something here for everyone!

This FREE Kindle book also features a bonus introduction to the Witchwood series. Grab your copy today! So, Mote it Be!

About the Author

For me, talking to readers who love my stories and characters as much as I do is a dream come true. NOTHING is more exhilarating or inspiring. The author writes, yes, but I honestly believe it is the reader, who breathes life and soul into the characters in a book. Without the reader and their wonderful imaginations, stories and characters are words arranged neatly on a page waiting to be born, waiting to be loved.
To the reader, my characters and I thank you.

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “Drops of Flowery Calm,” BY AUTHOR, Jane Sturgeon, @JaneSturgeon3

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

About this Book

Drops of Flowery Calm is an eBook collection of stories, flowers & colours, and their meanings and poems.

Janesturgeon.com/books/

MY RECOMMENDATION

I stumbled across this book several months ago when we were in the throes of the Corona Virus Pandemic. I’d searched for something uplifting to read, as our days seemed dark in this new reality.

What I found was a delightful collection of memoirs, featuring the kind of prose and poetry that helps you forget your woes. In fact, Jane’s introduction talks of how we all search for a place of calm, especially when we get buried under layers of living. Her remedy is to immerse ourselves in the colors of calm: blues, pinks, and deep purples.

Divided by these three color sections, the book reveals the meanings behind each color. Be prepared for stunning descriptions of past gardens, homes, and reprints of memorable poetry greats, like Emily Dickinson. Interspersed throughout, are Jane’s memories of the flowers, the colors, and past events that link it all together.

The flower photo images are provided by Clare Florist, who from 1978 to present is considered one of the UK’s most acclaimed and respected online florists.

This was a short read I completed in one evening. It took my mind off some tedious situations and for a brief time, I was immersed in the colors of calm.

My name is Jane, and I was born in England and have heard and seen spirit since I was little. My teenage years were spent in Africa and that taught me lessons on how we are all connected and about the importance of c0mmunity. I have worked as a systems analyst, technical writer, farm sitter, furniture restorer and therapist and I also spent a bit of time in The States in my mid-twenties. I now live on The Wirral in England, by the Irish Sea, and spend my days writing, making art and helping others to create the lives they choose.

My Passion

I believe that we all hold the keys to life within ourselves, and I have been sharing how to find and use those inner gifts for over ten years.

By linking in with our spirit guides, you can see different perspectives and ways on how to bring about the changes you seek in yourself and your own life.

Our modern society bombards us with images and impressions that things happen instantly, and this is a constant source of stress for many. However, as all gardeners know, seeds need to be planted in fertile soil and nurtured with patience, love and care. Courage is sometimes needed to re-arrange your life plants, even removing some completely. Life is about learning which plants work well for you and experimenting on the creation of a life garden that nourishes you.  There is no right or wrong, as you are an individual and have needs that are yours and yours alone.

My hope is to help you discover your inner gifts and the plants that nurture you in your life garden.

My work

There are many blessings in working with spirit, writing and creating.  On my blog, I craft stories and share my thoughts, life perspectives, creativity and interviews and reviews with fellow authors.

Through my readings, I channel from spirit and flow with loving care for those who ask for guidance.

My digital art feeds my creative side and I share photographs, words and images from many life adventures.

In conclusion, it is all about the joy of exploring, discovering, learning new things and working with love to support others to live a life they choose.

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “rescue and redemption: Poetry inspired by the T. S. Eliot poem ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock’ (A Love Poetry Trilogy Book 3),” BY AUTHOR, Frank Prem, @frank_prem

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

About this Book

Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherized upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells . . .

from The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock

Drawing on the phrasing of T.S. Eliot’s amazing early 20th century poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock (above) Frank Prem has produced a collection of companionable and introspective love poetry written, as always, in the unique style that allows every reader to relate.

Prem’s interpretations breathe new life into contemporary exploration of themes of love in poetry, and utilise Eliot’s original phrases to inspire a contemplation of the self in the context of landscape and the wider world:

I am seeking you
within the hubbub
and the burly

trying to gauge
location
by the strength
and timbre
of your voice

rising
and falling
even as you rise
and fall

from rescue and redemption

rescue and redemption is the third of the three collections that together comprise A Love Poetry Trilogy, with each revisiting outstanding work by stellar poets of the past to produce vibrant new collections. The first collection, walk away silver heart, draws on Amy Lowell’s deeply personal Madonna of the Evening Flowers, while the second, a kiss for the worthy, derives from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.

This is a new kind of poetry that tells stories, draws pictures and elicits emotional responses from readers. Just as the best poetry should.

Amazon.com

MY RECOMMENDATION

HERE is my review for book one, “Walk Away Silver Heart, Poetry
Inspired
 by
 the
Amy Lowell
poem ‘Madonna
 of
the
Evening
Flowers.'” HERE is my review for the second book, “a kiss for the worthy: Poetry inspired by the Walt Whitman poem ‘Leaves of Grass.'”

Australian Poet, Frank Prem, has created his third collection in the Love Poetry Trilogy, called “Rescue & Redemption: Poetry inspired by the T. S. Eliot poem ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.'” Prem believes that “Eliot’s Prufrock is a journey in search of love, perhaps with a companion, or for a companion.”

Using the found poetry technique, Prem creates a poem from each line of the epigraph, which he says serves as a Requiem. There are close to fifty poems in this book.

Throughout, the principal character sometimes seems feminine, then again switches to a more masculine tone; all the while sharing personal thoughts, as if whoever is sharing these revelations is revealing deep secrets. The prose sings to its own rhythm. Prem’s writing has embraced the brevity of words but found great depth in meaning.

Some of the poems that spoke to me were the flickering (stilled), (perhaps) what my belief, and my favorite: score (for an evening) which is filled with ample sensory details to make you feel as if you’re eavesdropping on an intimate scene.

This is a wonderful series and would make a thoughtful gift for the poetry lover in your family. These poems go well with chocolate and hot tea! I enjoyed every bite word!

Many thanks to the author for the advanced reader’s copy.

MY RECOMMENDATION

The much expected second book in Adele Marie Park’s Wisp series has arrived! The book is called “Sea Dragons, Wisp II.” You can find my review of “Wisp” book I, below.

Colleen’s #Book #Reviews – “Wisp,” by Author, Adele Marie Park

Title:  Wisp, Volume I Author: Adele Marie Park File Size: 840 KB Print Length: 218 Pages Publisher: Author Self Published Publication Date: 12/14/2016 Sold By: Amazon Digital Services LLC Language: English ASIN: B01MXYQ2E4 Formats: Paperback and Kindle Goodreads Genres: Fantasy, Magical Realism, Teen & Young Adult IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS: “Edra; a world where magic flourishes and where dark secrets are concealed by those who rule. Secrets… More

“Sea Dragons” begins with Wisp, a Marsh Faerie Law Enforcer, as he waits inside the office of the new Senior, Nether Green, an elf with considerable law enforcement experience to show for a planned meeting.

He reminisces about the events of the last six months, and recalls the death of his Senior officer Bartholomew at the hands of Dante Asano, and how Lady Pendra Thorne’s childhood home was now her mausoleum, where she lays sealed inside a glass coffin warded with spells. Wisp, Finn, and Arutha watch over the princess in the glass coffin day and night.

After an hour there is a knock at the door. Wisp learns there’s been a murder, and the new Senior is the victim! Even stranger, the new Senior is found hanging from a rope, made to look like a suicide.

After a visit to the scene of the murder, Wisp quickly picks up on a few prominent details and comes to the assumption that the new Senior was indeed murdered. Now, Wisp must solve the murder of another dead elf!

Meanwhile, at home, Finn discovers Pendra convulsing within her glass coffin. Finn summons his mother to help him deal with this new situation.

Inside the glass coffin, Pendra’s mind retreats into a favorite memory of childhood comfort, where she tries to maintain her sanity; unfortunately, the evil Dante is also trapped inside her body. In this state of flux within her mind, Pendra learns the horrible truth of the ancient evil that controls Dante Asano and his plan to rule Edra.

The magical coffin will only keep Pendra alive, and Dante contained for a brief time. To save her, Wisp and Finn and his family have to remove the evil Dante without harming Pendra.

When it’s decided that there might be a spell which will separate Dante from Pendra, Wisp and the others set off for Samoyer, a land across the Great Sea. The only problem is, Finn’s father, Slait, has a price on his head if he returns to his homeland. Yet, without this spell, Pendra will die and Edra could cease to exist.

Park has woven an atmospheric dark fantasy filled with suspense, murder, and magic! Through thoughtful detail, we’re introduced to a world filled with dragons, elves, goblins, faeries, and many other creatures where the laws of magic govern the land.

Park’s portrayal of the evil Farloaeth, the ancient harbinger of doom, reminded me of the Norse’s “Wild Hunt,” which added sensory details to the story in unexpected ways. She filled the book with plenty of twists and turns, which kept me reading long into the night.

The end was a total surprise, which stops on a bit of a cliffhanger. My mouth literally dropped open when I read the last pages. I never saw it coming.

I’ve been a fan of this author’s novels, since I stumbled upon some of her short- stories in several anthologies published within the writing community. Read “Wisp” and then delve into “Sea Dragons” as the books are not standalone novels. If you love fantasy, you will love these characters.

Seriously, I can’t wait to find out what happens in the third book. With Park’s creativity, the sky is the limit!

Many thanks to the author for providing me with an advanced reader’s copy of this book.

Author, Adele Marie Park

I was born in the north-east of Scotland, and at the age of six months I moved with family to live on the Orcadian island of Rousay. My childhood was surrounded by tales and legends of old, these themes and beliefs I have carried all my life. They now emerge and live within the pages of my books.

My most major work and my life’s passion is a series of tales regarding humans and selkies. The Suleskerry Saga portrays tales of merging worlds and peoples, delving into the battles, and loves therein.

I am a writer. I connect with people through the art of transformation.  The magic of words which transform into pictures. This magic touches the heart of the one who reads my words.
