Colleen’s Book Reviews

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

Since our move, I’ve read a few books I’d like to share to get caught up on my reviews. I’ll post each one to Amazon, GoodReads, & BookBub.

MY RECOMMENDATION:

The Rise of Gadreel is the third and final book in Vashti Q. Vega’s Fantasy Angel Series.

Using the blackest of magic, Lucifer, a.k.a. Satan figures a way out of his earthly prison by infiltrating a corrupt priesthood. As expected, it isn’t long before a terrible new evil invades the world.

Tired of the fight, Gadreel only wants to repent her past sins and find peace. She seeks God’s forgiveness, regretting her decision to fight alongside Lilith and Lucifer and the other fallen angels. She knows it’s now up to her and Dracúl to fight this new terror and to save humanity.

Along with a trio of extraordinary allies—a man of air, a man of stone, and a woman of fire—at her side, Gadreel finds the courage to defy her past and create a new future for herself and the world.

I’ve loved each book in this series, but Gadreel’s story was the most soul satisfying for me. The writing is riveting, and I read long into the night. The author weaves her magic by combining historical facts from the Dark Ages, along with a few tales from the Bible to create a story like no other.

Written from both the protagonist and antagonist views, the reader glimpses the battle between good and evil first hand—but not for the faint of heart. There were a few parts that made me squirm. Yet, in the end, I was sad to let the characters go. A must read unforgettable series!

My Recommendation:

I was thrilled to receive The Magician’s Soul: A Paranormal Romance (The Great Dagmaru Book 3) from Linda G. Hill as an advanced reader’s copy. I’ve enjoyed the entire series, and couldn’t wait to see what this third and final installment would bring.

Herman and Stephen have a wedding to plan—that is, if Herman’s recurring nightmares would go away. Her history of prophetic dreams takes the couple on a wild ride.

Herman also has to deal with her father’s alter ego, Mona Lisa, whose character definitely creeped me out. When her cousin Rudy shows up, the couple learns that she’s a succubus who vows to help Herman come to grips with her own bloodline. The only problem is, Rudy is used to taking what she wants and when she sets her sights on Stephen, the book takes off with a bang!

The author weaves in some serious magical aspects into this story that I never guessed or saw coming. Look for Herman’s dreams to connect her and Stephen in new ways. Besides the magic, the actual story is the love shared between Herman and Stephen.

Another book I couldn’t put down! This series is one of the most unusual I’ve read.

My Recommendation:

I received Diversion, Breaking the Pattern #2, as a gift from the author in a Facebook Group contest. P.D. Workman was a new author for me, and even though this is the second book in the series, I had no difficulty following the story line.

Meet Sandy, a teenage prostitute, junkie, and con-artist raised to a life of crime by her own father. Really, all Sandy wants is to be normal. As things continue to grow more dangerous for her, the young woman struggles to come to grips with her life choices.

I was impressed with the writing, and how smoothly Sandy’s tale flowed. The author had to go to great lengths to learn about life on the streets in order to make this story work like it did. The trials and tribulations of Sandy’s life kept me guessing until the end.

If you love stories with strong female protagonists who fail forward to become a better version of themselves, this story will capture your heart. Sandy was an unforgettable character. I lost hours in this book!

My Recommendation:

Since I enjoyed P.D. Workman’s writing from the crime drama above, I tried one of her cozy mysteries, called Gluten Free Murder (Auntie Clem’s Bakery Book 1).

Erin moves back to the small town of Eagle Falls to start up a gluten-free bakery in her aunt’s store after she passed away. Everything is going great until the grand opening when Angela Plaint, the owner of the rival bakery down the street, dies after eating one of Erin’s cupcakes.

Erin becomes the prime suspect in Angela’s death. To make matters worse, even Detective Terry Piper thinks she’s guilty until a series of break-ins at the bakery steer them in another direction.

Small towns are filled with gossip, and Eagle Falls is no different. Soon the rumors about treasure hunting, drug dealing, and a missing boy propel Erin into a mystery she must solve before the actual killer finds her!

If you find your life in turmoil, grab a cozy mystery to pass the time and to forget your woes. This book is FREE, and I found the mystery to be a good read as it remained true to its genre.

To be honest, I preferred the crime drama to the cozy mystery, but you be the judge.

My Recommendation:

This book explores the actual experiences of two friends through letters as they scrutinize the mysteries of ancient Britain’s (Albion) medieval churches. Sue Vincent and Stuart France are the co-authors.

Don and Wen are characters in The Initiate (Triad of Albion Book 1), the first of nine books that tell the full story of what became a true spiritual journey. This book stands alone as a practical guide of how to listen for and to interpret the voice of the living land and its history from a unique perspective.

I enjoyed the relationship between Don and Wen written in the epistolary format. These letters are an intimate glimpse into their friendship and their love for British history. They seek to understand the sacred sites by understanding their purpose.

Ancient symbols are powerful reminders of the ancients who came before us. What better way to seek wisdom than through the churches built during Anglo-Saxon times? The remnants of the Vikings, depicted through Odin’s thunderbolts, the images of the horse and the white horse are only a few of the symbols discussed. It is apparent that Christianity and Paganism crossed many paths.

Through their travels, the two friends open themselves to all that is magical, questioning and seeking wisdom. In their discussions of time, death, and rebirth I found solace. At times, their research led them to more questions which could only be resolved through further esoteric discussions which let to another road trip!

I found the book filled with information, sometimes more than I could digest in one sitting. But it is their knowledge that kept drawing me back to reread sections more than once. I look forward to the second book in Don and Wen’s spiritual quest.

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “Tea, Anyone? (A Brooke & Abby Cozy Mystery Book 1),” BY AUTHOR, S. R. Mallery, @SarahMallery1

The magical world of Sarah (S. R.) Mallery’s books

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

About this Book

How do two modern, quirky, twenty-something gals solve murders in a small, cozy USA town?

Easy. With a little time travel, some humor, and a lot of hard work. When the skeptical Brooke first meets the psychic Abby, she’s not impressed. But with the help of her comfort cat, her middle-aged roomie, her childhood friend, and a hunky detective hinting at a sweet romance, Brooke not only accepts that Abby has real gifts, it’s clear that these five people and one cat make up a crack team.

Got tea, anyone? In 1773, the Boston Tea Party sure did. Find out why going back in time helps break the case!
#Cozy mystery, #Time travel, #Paranormal, #Murder, #Cats #US History, #Humor

MY RECOMMENDATION

“Tea Anyone?” is a time-travel cozy mystery filled with unique (yet true to life) characters. Pay special attention to the names of the members of the Pride and Joy Gym. I got quite a few laughs out of the author’s creativity. There’s even a bit of romance blooming. And of course, before you know it, there’s a dead body.

Brooke has problems with authority. When she doesn’t pass the police exam, the chief places her in a researching position. Brooke’s new neighbor Abby, is a flower child, a hippie throwback from the 1960s who possesses the ability to time travel. Somehow the two women form a reluctant friendship. With the help of a few friends and Brooke’s cat, Junie, the group assists the police in solving a string of murders that reach back into time.

One of Mallery’s writing gifts is her love for history. Historical details abound, adding to the realistic feel in this mystery. The plot is sound and well thought out, and the characters are the kind of people who could be your neighbors.

The romance developing between Brooke and Tony only makes me want to read more. Where is their relationship going? This is the first book in the series and I can’t wait to see what Brooke and Abby get into next.

As an added bonus, this book is only $.99, the perfect weekend read!

About the Author

A USA TODAY Best Selling author and two-time READERS’ FAVORITE GOLD MEDAL winner, S. R. Mallery–as her fans say–“brings history to life.”

They say I’m as eclectic as my characters. I’ve been a singer, a composer, a calligrapher, a quilt artist, and an ESL/Reading teacher. But it is the world of writing historical fiction where I feel I’ve come “home.” It’s where I’ve received various awards and in addition, get to do my second love: Research.

When people talk about the news of the day, or when I listen to music, my overactive imagination likens the story to a similar kind of news in the past, which helps me conjure up scenes between characters I’ve yet to meet.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT S. R. MALLERY’S BOOKS:

Unexpected Gifts: “This is a book to be savored, as there is much information, as well as a captivating story about one family greatly affected by the events of their times. A thought-provoking read indeed!” — Deborah Lloyd for Readers’ Favorite

Sewing Can Be Dangerous and Other Small Threads
This is a fascinating collection of anecdotes and historical snippets focusing on the timely art of sewing. – Emily-Jane Hills Orford for READER’s FAVORITE

“Mallery is an extremely talented writer. Her style lures the reader; you actually become a part of her tapestry of expression.” — Blogger Melinda Hines, on Tales to Count On.

The Dolan Girls “was so enjoyable. At times rollicking, at times poignant, but always authentic, well researched and a beautifully told story. Highest recommendation. Five stars.” — B. Nelson, Top Amazon reviewer

Genteel Secrets “is a beautiful story which transports the reader in time. True to life historical fiction at its best, it’s so much more than romance.” – Riley, Top Amazon reviewer

Trouble in Glamour Town “is very historically accurate, portraying the real workings of the Hollywood sleaze, dishonesty and corruption happening at that time. S.R. Mallery is a gifted author who drew me into the story from the first word and kept me reading until the very last page… ” – Trudi LoPreto for Readers’ Favorite

Ellie & The War On Powder Creek
“This is one of those rare western romances that are historically accurate. From the way the characters talk to their dress and their way of life, the author has given a very accurate account of how the west was back in the late 1800s. The narrative was reflective of that time; the descriptions took me to the places and the characters and had me experiencing the hardships and tension along with them …
The author’s writing style is the magic behind this amazing novel. S.R. Mallery did a great job at keeping the story alive, keeping the momentum going and making sure that the reader didn’t lose interest at any point. I loved this book”

COLLEEN’S 2019 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “The Bare Witch Project,” BY AUTHOR, Celeste Hall, @ACelesteHall

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is colleens-book-reviews.png

Featuring Your New Weekend Countdown to Halloween Read!

About this Book:

Werecats and Witchcraft, A Pagan Romance

Morgan is a wannabe witch with a fear of cats and a traumatic history that puts her straight into the path of trouble. When a large black cat races into her house to escape a dog attack, she considers it just another example of how bad her luck has become. But this was no ordinary cat. Her life was about to be turned upside down by an ultra sexy beast with a few dark secrets of his own.

Can a secretive werecat shifter protect her from a dangerous stalker? Or will she be forced to rely upon the pagan magic her grandmother so strongly believed in, but which Morgan feels insecure using?

This is the first book in a pagan romance series involving werecat shifters and witches. There are some suggestive situations and shapeshifter nudity, but these stories are safe for most mature teens and young adult readers.

Celeste Hall’s Kitty Coven Series:

Book #1: The Bare Witch Project
Book #1.5 Something Wicca This Way Comes (A Short Prequel Story)
Book #2 Love Is A Witch
Book #2.5 A Yowling Yuletide (A Short Christmas Story)
Book #3 Cheaper By The Coven

Book #3.5 The Cat In The Hat (A Short Halloween Story)

Amazon.com

Halloween is right around the corner. What are you reading?

MY RECOMMENDATION:

I enjoy reading cozy paranormal fiction even when it’s not Halloween but at this time of the year, witch lit is devilishly fun!

On the anniversary of her grandmother’s passing, Morgan faces a dilemma when her best friends, Heidi and Rachel show up to ask her to go out drinking with them. Instead, the ever-cautious Morgan stays home to practice the bare witch project.

After her grandmother’s death, the young woman found the altar and ritual tools hidden in the attic. The discovery spurred her on to learn more about her grandmother. Tonight she would complete one of the rituals that she’d found in her grandmother’s Book of Shadows, a personal journal of the older woman’s experiences in the craft.

Heidi and Rachel hesitate to leave their friend alone because of Morgan’s recent break-up with her psychotic boyfriend. As Morgan pushes them out the door, a sleek black cat runs inside, seeking refuge from the pursuit of an angry dog.

Now what? Morgan is afraid of cats. How will she get the interloper out of her house? And, who is this sexy stranger named Leo?

A quick read, “The Bare Witch Project,” kept me engaged in the story. The paranormal aspects of a cat shifting into the form of a man are entertaining, to say the least. There is an unraveling mystery that I suspect will be solved through the series.

This book is listed as FREE on Amazon which is a great way to meet the characters, who are likable and best of all, believable. Enjoy the Autumn Season and jump into this paranormal read!

Colleen’s 2019 #Book #Reviews – “Broken Heart Attack,” by Author, James J. Cudney, @jamescudney4

Featuring your next weekend read!

About “Broken Heart Attack”

When an extra ticket becomes available to see the dress rehearsal of King Lear, Kellan tags along with Nana D and her buddies. But when one of them dies of an apparent heart attack in the middle of the second act, Nana D asks Kellan to investigate.

With family members in debt and secret meetings, Kellan learns that the Paddingtons might not be as clean-cut as everyone thinks. But can Kellan find the killer of Gwendolyn Paddington, or will he get caught up in his own stage fright?

Amazon.com

My Recommendation

After the first book in this series, Academic Curveball, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the second book. I guessed that Nana D would feature in this story along with the protagonist, Kellan Ayrwick, but what new adventures would Jay Cudney cook up this time?

“Broken Heart Attack,” introduces a new mystery for Kellan to solve in the form of a heart attack which kills one of Nana D’s friends during Braxton Hall’s dress rehearsal of King Lear. At Nana D’s insistence, the dutiful grandson digs for clues and asks the kinds of questions that set the occupants of the town on edge.

At the same time that Nana D announces that she’s running for mayor, the outspoken granny decides that she has other plans for Kellan. With hilarious results, she pokes her nose into his love life. Thankfully, Kellan is successful in foiling Nana D’s matchmaking attempts with her friend, Gwen. But that’s not the end of that story!

Kellan’s days are filled with chaos! Between teaching, investigating a murder, avoiding confrontation with his boss, and raising his adorable daughter, Emma, the self-appointed sleuth barely has a moment to himself. However, the story really heats up when Kellan learns that his late wife’s family is involved with the mob!

Through the intertwining plot, the reader learns the strengths and weaknesses of Kellen Ayrwick. Does he have the determination to solve this murder along with his own family turmoil?

Cudney weaves a satisfying tale filled with murder, mayhem, and plenty of suspense to keep the reader guessing until the surprise ending.

And did I mention there was humor? Granny D is so realistic in her attitude and dialogue. I guarantee you will laugh at her crazy antics.

The book ends with many unanswered questions about Kellan’s family issues, which only makes me want to find out more. I can’t wait to read the third novel in the series, “Flower Power Trip: Death at The Masquerade Ball.”

I received an advance-reader copy of the book for this review and read the book in June. I’m still playing catch-up after my move this summer. Sorry it took me so long to share!

Praise from readers:

★★★★★ – “An exciting cozy mystery.”

★★★★★ – “Full of twists and turns, and an ending you won’t see coming.”

MY RECOMMENDATION

Kellan Ayrwick returns home to attend a dinner in honor of his father’s retirement from Braxton College. While he’s there, and as part of his job, Kellan has been asked to meet up with a researcher for the true crime TV show that he works on.

Instead, Kellan finds a dead body who happens to be a professor at Braxton. As the bodies start piling up, and between his friends and family’s involvement at the college, Kellan worries that someone he cares about will be arrested for the crime. Can he work out the truth and solve the murders?

Academic Curveball is a good read and the mystery appeared well thought out. However, the book is overly long when it didn’t need to be. For me, the characters were a bit trite and overdone.

As the male protagonist, Kellan does too much self-talk which bogs the story down. Nana D was quite the character and should have her own series. I had quite a few chuckles at her dialogue.

The one thing I wasn’t sure on was the timing of when the college baseball season actually started. The book begins a few weeks after Christmas in Pennsylvania with a subplot about a Major League Baseball scout interested in one of the students. I consulted with my ex-pitcher husband regarding the timing of the season. He said the author was spot on with his schedule, considering it’s the end of March and my husband is glued to the television for Opening Day.

For a cozy mystery, the book delivers all the way up to the cliffhanger ending. I look forward to continuing the series.

Colleen’s 2019 #Book #Reviews – “Bottling It, A Wayfair Witches Cozy Mystery #1,” by Author, A. A. Albright

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS

Wanda Wayfair is a bit of a late starter.

At almost twenty-one she still hasn’t received her magical powers, and she’s running out of time. But that doesn’t bother Wanda. Much. Not when she can spend all of her time in the human world and pretend that her coven doesn’t exist. But when Wanda takes a job at Berrys’ Bottlers, working with the handsome Will Berry and his unpleasant Aunt Alice, she soon realises that she’s a lot closer to the magical world than she thought.

All over Dublin, humans are murdering witches. When asked why, all they’ll say is, ‘I dunno why I done it.’ But Wanda thinks she does know why they’ve done it – and hopefully she’ll receive her power in time to help her coven discover the truth.

MY RECOMMENDATION

Meet Wanda Wayfair, a young woman whose heritage stems from a long line of witches. There’s only one problem. It appears, she didn’t inherit the witch gene. Wanda is what you would call an unempowered witch. At this point in her life, she’s given up all hope of ever possessing any witchy abilities. Even Accounting sounds like a decent option.

The story begins as Wanda arrives home in Dublin. Across the street from her house, Wanda notices a body being wheeled into an ambulance. She witnesses a twenty-something-year-old girl shoved into a police car, screaming, “I dunno why I done it!” over and over again. Now her curiosity is peeked… I mean, wouldn’t you wonder what was going on? I sure did!

For whatever reason, witches are being murdered in Dublin. As the mysterious events unfold Wanda’s powers surge into action. She’s had training in the magikal arts but never used magic herself, which forces her back into her family coven where her family gives her a helping hand.

As the novel unfolds, Wanda is forced to live within the world of magic. Everything’s not as it seems and she learns how to maneuver the class system of the magical world. Be prepared for vampires, talking rats, and weredogs!

I love cozy mysteries and when they have the paranormal mixed in they are great fun to read. On top of that, this book contains humorous characters you can’t help but love. The world building created the groundwork for the story. The mystery is simplistic but for me that didn’t detract from my enjoyment. I will definitely read more from this author. This was an enjoyable read, and at $.99 for a Kindle copy you can’t go wrong.

Along with the help from sexy Declan, the owner of the local pawn shop, and the only other young person in the town, Charlotte and a wacky cast of elderly characters delve into the mystery of identifying the body. The terrifying part is that the murderer lives right under their noses!

I loved the chemistry and humor shared between Charlotte and Declan. Numerous times I found myself laughing out loud, as the two young people try to deal with a mutual attraction to each other while surrounded by nosy neighbors watching them at all times. I look forward to seeing how the author, Amy Vansant brings the two of them together in subsequent novels. They are a great match and it will be fun to see their relationship advance.

This is a cozy mystery with a romantic sparkle. It is filled with humor and keeps you laughing till the end. On top of that, I did not figure out the ending until the very last, which was a pleasant surprise. If you are looking for a book to take on vacation or for a trip to the beach, Pineapple Lies is a lighthearted and fun read to enjoy with a relaxing glass of wine. Cheers!
