Colleen’s 2019 #Book #Reviews – “Secret Lady,” (Ladies in Time 3 Book Series)” by Author, @BethTrissel

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

At Lavender House, Evie McIntyre is haunted by the whispers from her bedroom closet. Before she can make sense of their murmurs, the house “warbles” between times and transports her to the Civil War. Past and present have blended, and Evie wishes she’d paid more attention to history. Especially since former Confederate officer, Jack Ramsey, could use a heads up.

Torn between opposing forces, Jack struggles to defend the valley and people he loves. Meeting Evie turns his already tumultuous world upside down. Will solving the mystery of the whispers return her home, and will the handsome scout be by her side?

Against the background of Sheridan’s Burning of the Shenandoah Valley, Jack and Evie fight to save their friends and themselves – or is history carved in stone?

MY RECOMMENDATION:

The last book in the “Ladies in Time” Series ends this trio on a high note. Author, Beth Trissel has created another paranormal romance unlike any other I’ve read. This book is based on the historical data native to her beloved Shenandoah Valley in Virginia where she resides.

The book opens in present-day Virginia, where Evie McIntyre lives with her grandmother in what is known as Lavender House. This house holds the distinction of being one of the only dwellings that survived the burnings by Sheridan’s troops during the Civil War.

Evie works for her Gran as a tour guide at Lavender House, usually garbed in the clothes of the Civil War era. When she begins hearing strange whispers coming from the closet in her room, she realizes the house is more unusual than she could have ever guessed.

One night, Evie falls asleep in the lounge downstairs. She awakens to find herself in a different time and place. Thank goodness for Jack Ramsey, a former Confederate officer. He finds her in the nick of time. Jack is a guide for the Unionist Underground Railroad still grappling with the effects and the brutality of the war.

Evie and Jack form an immediate connection, not realizing how deeply this union will prove to be for them. Jack is stunned to find that Evie is from the future. To protect her, he takes her to a nearby homestead which is owned by a Mennonite couple which ironically, is owned by her grandmother in the future.

This Mennonite family is like a foster family to Jack. He realizes that reputations he must preserve reputations, so he explains to his friends that Evie is his wife. The story progresses to the fateful burning of the Shenandoah Valley which is described in poignant detail. Wait until you reach the end of the book!

The house is the catalyst in this story, bringing Jack and Evie together as if to set right the wrongs of the past. The paranormal elements are delicious and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I’ve enjoyed every book in this series. HERE is my review of Book One, “Somewhere My Lady.” The second book is called, “The White Lady,” and you can find my review HERE.

Author, Beth Trissel is a master storyteller. If you love romance, history, and the right amount of paranormal suspense and magic, this is the series for you!

The author gifted me with a pre-publication copy of this book without obligation. This review contains my personal opinion after choosing to read the story.

Colleen’s 2019 #Book #Reviews – “Kira, Daughter of the Moon” by Author, @BethTrissel

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

Logan McCutcheon returns to colonial Virginia after seven years in the hands of Shawnee Indians. But was he really a captive, as everybody thinks? He looks and fights like a warrior, and seems eager to return to those he calls friends and family.

Kira McClure has waited for Logan all those years, passing herself off as odd to keep suitors at bay–and anyone else from getting too close. Now that he’s back, he seems to be the only person capable of protecting her from the advances of Josiah Campbell and accusations of witchcraft. And to defend the settlers against a well-organized band of murderous thieves.

This is a new release of a previously published edition.
Kira, Daughter of the Moon is the sequel to Through the Fire.

MY RECOMMENDATION:

Author, Beth Trissel, is a master at writing unforgettable historical romance. I’ve read many of her novels and she often integrates the mystical elements of Native American lore found in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where she resides. This “mysticism” never fails to draw me into the story, and this book is no different.

After seven years of living with the Shawnee Indians, Logan McCutcheon returns to Virginia, where he finds Kira McClure has grown into a beautiful young woman.

Kira and Logan grew up together, and she always held out hope that he would return to her one day. Now that he’s back, there is a problem. Kira spends most of her time fighting off all the willing suitors that plot to take her away from him.

One of the settlers, Josiah Campbell, causes trouble when he realizes that Logan and Kira plan to marry. He attempts to hunt the young woman down to make her his own. Kira employs a few of her many gifts, managing to save herself, while Josiah and his crew brand her as a witch.

Logan appears to be the only person capable of protecting her from the advances of Josiah Campbell as the accusations of witchcraft intensify around the girl.

But, Josiah Campbell isn’t finished with his evil deeds. He accuses Logan of theft ensuring that his reputation amongst the settlers is also damaged.

But, as they say, never underestimate the power of a woman. Kira has a few tricks up her sleeve, and surprisingly, so does Logan. I couldn’t put this book down. Great romance, suspense, and magic – all of my favorite things.

I enjoyed this novel and all the twists and turns which led me to a satisfying end. I was surprised to learn that this was the sequel to the book, “Through the Fire,” as I thought this novel stood well on its own.

If you love fast-paced historical romance with a touch of the paranormal, you will love this book. Just make sure to read with a light on.

Colleen’s 2018 #Book #Reviews – “The Lady’s Slipper,” by Author, Deborah Swift

Title: The Lady’s Slipper (Westmorland, Book One)

Amazon Author Page: Deborah Swift

Publication Date: August 20, 2016

Formats: Paperback & Kindle

Genres: Literature & Fiction, British & Irish, Sagas, Historical Romance

Goodreads

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

A sweeping historical novel of orchids, obsession, and murder

England 1660
When artist Alice Ibbetson discovers a rare orchid, the lady’s-slipper, growing in a nearby wood, she is captivated by its beauty. It is the last surviving specimen and she wants to preserve it for future generations. There is only one problem – it is growing on the land of Richard Wheeler, a newly-converted Quaker, who will not allow her to touch it.
Fearing for the flower’s fragility, she steals the orchid, little dreaming that this seemingly simple act will set off an unstoppable chain of events – a web of intrigue that will lead to murder and exile, and change her comfortable life forever.
‘Compelling and intriguing, this is a well-told story full of wonderful prose and surprising events. It’s a vivid addition to the genre’. –RT BookReviews
“It is a genuinely engrossing story, with characters you can get interested in.” –The Mum website

MY RECOMMENDATION:

As a gardening enthusiast, I was drawn to this book because of the rare orchid. The book blurb literally drew me in.

The time period centers on the Quaker Revolution in Great Britain, a time period I was not familiar with. The orchid becomes the catalyst that moves the story forward in strange and unusual ways.

Alice Ibbetson, an artist who paints flowers and plants, is still grieving from the death of her little sister. Her neighbor, Richard Wheeler, a newly converted Quaker, shares the existence of the rare lady’s slipper orchid with Alice. The plant was long thought to have been extinct in England.

Alice pleads with Richard to let her dig up the orchid in order to protect it. Richard refuses, and Alice takes matters into her own hands and steals the flower hoping to save it, with the idea that she could grow more.

Richard is outraged and bound and determined to prove that she took the flower. Fearing for her life, Alice enlists the help of an overbearing lord who desires the flower as a cure for a disease he’s suffered from his entire life.

Trusting no one, Alice plots a way to preserve the plant, but thoughts of war are sweeping the land. Soon, Alice and Richard find themselves immersed in the conflict. They are sucked in by the trickery of the greedy lord, while Alice’s maid works her intentions on Alice’s husband and wealth.

There was sex in the book, so be prepared for the author’s portrayal of the raw realities of life during this time period which underscores the people’s affinity for believing the worst in people. This also illustrates the power their religion held over them. The story reads like a tragedy, although karma brings the story to a satisfying close.

I found “The Lady’s Slipper” to be entertaining and a real page-turner. If you love Historical Romance filled with intrigue, this is one book you will enjoy.

About the Author:

Thanks for visiting my author page! As you read this I’ll probably be writing from my tall stone house which was once a school and built in 1902. This is a house that is “new” in English terms, as many of our local villages date back to the 1630’s or even earlier.

I write historical fiction, a genre I love. I loved the Victorian classics such as Jane Eyre, Little Women, Lorna Doone, and Wuthering Heights. As I child I loved to read and when I had read my own library books, I used to borrow my mother’s library copies of Anya Seton and Daphne du Maurier. I have loved reading historical novels ever since; though I’m a bookaholic and I read widely – contemporary and classic fiction as well as historicals.

In the past, I used to work as a set and costume designer for theatre and TV, so I enjoy the research aspect of creating historical fiction, something I loved doing as a scenographer. Each book takes about six months of research before I am ready to begin writing. More details of my research and writing process can be found on my website. I like to write about extraordinary characters set against the background of real historical events.

I live in North Lancashire on the edge of the Lake District, an area made famous by the Romantic Poets such as Wordsworth and Coleridge.

I took an MA in Creative Writing in 2007 and now teach classes and courses in writing, and offer editorial advice from my home.

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

“Autumn 1784: Karin McNeal hasn’t grasped who she really is or her fierce birthright. A tragic secret from the past haunts the young Scots-Irish woman longing to learn more of her mother’s death and the mysterious father no one will name. The elusive voices she hears in the wind hint at the dramatic changes soon to unfold in the mist-shrouded Alleghenies.

Jack McCray, the wounded stranger who staggers through the door on the eve of her twentieth birthday and anniversary of her mother’s death, holds the key to unlock the past. Will Karin let this handsome frontiersman lead her to the truth and into his arms, or seek the shelter of her fiercely possessive kinsmen? Is it only her imagination or does someone, or something, wait beyond the brooding ridges—for her?”

(A revised version of romance novel Daughter of the Wind)

MY RECOMMENDATION:

I’ve been a fan of Beth Trissel’s books for several years. I haven’t read a single book of her’s that I haven’t enjoyed. In fact, this book fell off my (magical) radar until this summer when I saw her advertise it on social media. What a great find to add to my Kindle library.

Book one, “The Bearwalker’s Daughter,” is a historical romance filled with lots of great Native American lore, early American history, magic, and even some sizzling sex!

There’s a mystery that swirls around the birth of Karin McNeal, and when in 1784, Jack McCray finds the bonny lass, he’s bewitched by her unusual beauty. Karin is haunted by voices on the wind who seem to be calling out to her. She can’t figure out what the voices mean or why she has been chosen to hear them. The only thing she knows for certain is that her mother died shortly after her birth, and no one will tell her who her father is.

Of course, Jack knows her birthright, having been sent by Karin’s father, Shequenor, who belongs to the bear clan, a division of the Shawnee tribe, to bring his daughter home to him. However, Karin isn’t aware of that fact, and even if she were, she is so drawn to Jack that nothing could tear her from his arms. Not even the family that raised her.

Jack is part of that family too, but tragically he was taken as a child by the Shawnee tribe, to be raised as Shequenor’s brother. That put him fighting on the wrong side of the war for American Independence. As a result, he is shunned by his step-father and half-brother.

The family discord sets the story in motion as Karin and Jack declare their love for each other. Now, Jack must deal with his emotions and love for Karin as he tries to figure out how to honor her father’s wishes. If they both survive it will be a miracle!

The magical aspects of this tale are what drew me deeper into the story. I love Native American lore, and knowing this author like I do, I knew there would be some spectacular paranormal activity, and there was!

This is not only Karin and Jack’s love story, it is also the love story of Karin’s parents, finally coming full circle. This is a fabulous read that kept me enthralled for hours.

I’m looking forward to reading the second book in the series, “Through the Fire, book two” in the Native American Warrior Series.

Colleen’s Author Spotlight: Unexpected Gifts, by S. R. Mallery, & a Contest!

CollieAre you looking for a great book to read? If so, you will find what you are looking for in Unexpected Gifts.  I read this book and loved it! Here’s my review:

Sarah Mallery weaves her magic for writing short stories with a historical flare into the plot of this novel, making it seem like a lesson in life one could live by. I was completely wrapped up in the characters who touched me deeply with the realities of their own life struggles. I also found I was emotionally connected to many of the true life events depicted in the book of which occurred during my journey into adulthood. You could say, through Sarah’s writing, I received some ‘unexpected gifts’ of realization of my own.

I rated “Unexpected Gifts,” as 5 out of 5 stars. “Unexpected Gifts,” is the rare kind of book that encourages you to look at your own family heritage to find the answers to your own problems. Long after the completion of the book, I missed the characters and the impact their stories made on me. This one really touched me deeply.

Don’t forget to enter the contest at the end of the post for a chance to win a Kindle copy of this book. ❤

In the Author’s Words:

“What do a well-bred Southern Belle and a Northern working class Pinkerton detective have in common? Espionage . . . And romance. At the start of the U.S. Civil War, while young men begin dying on American battlefields and slavery is headed toward its end, behind the scenes, female undercover work and Pinkerton intelligence are alive and well. But in the end, can this unlikely Romeo and Juliet couple’s love survive, or will they be just another casualty of war?”

My Recommendation:

Anytime S. R. Mallery releases a new book is a great day for the enthusiasts who follow her historical romances. So, you can imagine my excitement when she released, Genteel Secrets, a Civil War romance with a unique twist – Alan Pinkerton, who served as head of the Union Intelligence Service, and who created the famous Pinkerton Detective Agency.

Set in 1861 in Washington, D.C., we are introduced to James Neely, an Irish immigrant who has worked his way out of the slums to become a doctor. In a chance encounter in a city park, he meets Hannah Mayfield, an educated woman from the Confederate South. In addition to their irresistible attraction, is a mutual admiration in the way they both express the politics of the day. Most Southern women do not engage in such things, and James is clearly smitten.

A series of life events interrupts their blossoming love affair. James finds his calling by joining the Pinkerton’s, where he is thrust into the middle of an investigation into that of a notorious spy ring, running out in the open within the capital. Little does he know, the elusive Hannah, has been blackmailed into taking part in the political intrigue by members of her own family. The challenge is whether their love can stand the test of time and win out in the end.

However, this story is bigger than James and Hannah’s love affair. It is also a political commentary on America’s Civil War and the treatment of slaves. It is about loyalty and friendship and the choices people made to keep true to their personal freedom and beliefs.

At the beginning of each chapter, the author inserted quotations that shared the political climate of the times. I enjoyed these passages because it added a sense of credibility to the story. I’ve added this book to my “Me-Time,” category because I loved it so much. I could not turn the pages fast enough to find out what happened next. The ending was unexpected and restored my faith in humanity.

If you like fast-paced historical drama, this is one book you will not want to miss. I loved it!

Do you love romantic fiction? How about HISTORICAL romantic fiction? You do? I do, too! So, you can imagine how excited I was to see such a great group of authors coming together to form a collection where you could sample their work before you buy.

There is much to choose from, and each author shares enough of their story to whet your appetite for more. After reading each excerpt, I’ve decided that I would like to read more from these writers and will order some of the other titles. I’m hoping Santa will be good to me this year so that I can buy more books!

Included in this anthology is an example from the book Dancing With Air. I have read the full novel of Dancing With Air, a poignant tale of true love which begins during World War II between Lenny and Natasha which then culminates in the later years of their lives. Their story is skillfully told by Uvi Poznansky. Please click HERE to read my review.

This compilation is well worth the price and the opportunity to meet and sample the work of authors I haven’t read before. As an avid reader, this is truly a value packed offer.

Silver’s #BOOK REVIEWS – “Dancing With Air,” BY Uvi Poznansky

In the Author’s Words:

“Serving on the European front, Lenny longs for Natasha, the girl who captured his heart back home. He writes bogus reports, designed to fall into the hands of Nazi Intelligence. To fool the enemy, these reports are disguised as love letters to another woman. This task must remain confidential, even at the risk of Natasha becoming suspicious of him.

Once she arrives in London, Lenny takes her for a ride on his Harley throughout England, from the White Cliffs of Dover to a village near an underground ammunition depot in Staffordshire. When he is wounded in a horrific explosion, Natasha brings him back to safety, only to discover the other woman’s letter to him. He wonders, will she trust him again, even though as a soldier, he must keep his mission a secret? Will their love survive the test of war?

In the past Natasha wrote, with girlish infatuation, “He will be running his fingers down, all the way down to the small of my back, touching his lips to my ear, breathing his name, breathing mine. Here I am, dancing with air.” In years to come, she will begin to lose her memory, which will make Lenny see her as delicate. “I gather her gently into my arms, holding her like a breath.” But right now, during the months leading up to D-Day, she is at her peak. With solid resolve, she is ready to take charge of the course of their story.

Dancing with Air is a standalone WWII historical fiction novel, as well as the fourth volume of a family saga series titled Still Life with Memories, one of family sagas best sellers of all time. If you like family saga romance, wounded warrior romance books, military romantic suspense, or strong female lead romance, you will find that this love story is a unique melding of them all.”

My Recommendation:

This was my first introduction to the writings of Uvi Poznansky and I must say I was delighted. Dancing With Air is a poignant tale of love which begins during World War II between Lenny and Natasha. Most of the story covers their life in England, East Anglia, which held significance to me as I had been stationed there myself in the early 1980’s. The descriptions were superb and in my mind’s eye, I saw the white cliffs of Dover through the words on the page.

What I liked most about the book is the retelling of their memories, mostly by Lenny. The entire story is shadowed by a tragic illness that has Natasha in its grips. The reader feels Lenny’s pain at the possibility of losing his beloved wife. Seldom have I read such a depth of emotion portrayed by both characters. I found it easy to become wrapped up in the events that happened in the past and the present. I shed many tears, some in joy, and some in sorrow.

The fact that this book was the fourth in the series did not matter, other than the fact that I now want to read the complete series. I must add another feature of the story I really enjoyed. Uvi Poznansky threaded the lyrics of songs throughout the novel, which given the time frame, was a huge part of life during World War II. We’re so used to our world of immediate social media connections that we forget how people really bonded back then. For me, the songs added the “ring of truth,” to their romantic memories. Those songs connected both characters and allowed the reader a peek into their romance and the love that blossomed from it.

I read this novel quickly because it was the kind of story that drew me into the lives of the characters. Lenny’s story of his time in the Marines is filled with mystery and intrigue. Natasha leads the life of a concert pianist on tour in Europe. Their joining as partners in life is what will touch you the most. If you love romance novels with a touch of history and realism, you will love Dancing With Air. I know I did.

Silver’s #Book Reviews – “The Heart of Annie… The Strength of God,” By Marianne Coyne

  • Title: The Heart of Annie… The Strength of God
  • Author: Maryanne Coyne

  • Print Length: 88 pages
  • Publisher: Maryanne Coyne, 1st Edition

  • Genres: Literature & Fiction, Romance, Religious & Inspirational, Christian Literature, Historical Romance

In the Author’s Words:

“Fifteen-year-old Annie Salvatore loves the opportunities and excitement of growing up in early twentieth century America. Her dream of falling in love and escaping the tradition of an arranged marriage, much as her mother did years ago in Italy, is her future hope. But sometimes life doesn’t give us what we want in the package we had envisioned. As the year’s pass, Annie discovers that the love in her heart is not enough without strength.

Through life’s joys and woes, Annie’s faith presses her closer toward God. He gently teaches her heart to forgive and to love more deeply, as her spiritual journey unfolds. In surrendering her heart to His strength, Annie discovers the ability to conquer. Step back in time into Annie’s shoes and walk her journey, as it leads her to make one of the most important decisions in her life and the life of another.

Based on a true story of faith, courage, sadness and joy, The Heart of Annie…The Strength of God will uplift, encourage, and entertain you from the first page to the last.”

My Recommendation:

You know, sometimes I just want to read a book that is inspiring and uplifting. Believe me, this is one of those books! The Heart of Annie… The Strength of God will make you feel like you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Prepare to be awakened to the joys and sorrows of one woman’s life and how your own life journey can be renewed through love and compassion.

So much of our news today centers on immigration and the plight of immigrants across the world. It was important for me, to step back in time and remember that most of us in America would not be here but for our brave immigrant ancestors that started their lives anew in a foreign country. As the child and grandchild of immigrant parents and grandparents from Russia, I was deeply touched by Annie’s journey. Her story is one that will resonate with many women.

The novel is set in West Orange, New Jersey. It is the early 1920’s. Born in Italy, Annie balances between the two cultures, Italian and American, in a society that desperately clings to their Italian heritage. At the same time, she wants to embrace the language and customs of her new country. It appeared the younger generation of men and women were excited to embrace the new land, while the older men and women struggled to maintain their way of life in the old country.

Annie’s story is unique because of how she learns to deal with life. When fate deals some harsh blows to Annie and her husband, she rises to the occasion. Through her faith in God, she finds the strength to change and grow. What she finds is a gift of the purest kind, love, and compassion.

I read this book in one night. I loved this family and how they stuck together through thick and thin. The fact that the story is based on true incidents and people made it all the more special to me. No matter what your belief system is, you will love this story. Annie shows that through faith and compassion, we can overcome anything!

This is a “ME time” book! ❤

Silver’s Book Reviews – “The Lady of the Pier – The Storm,” BY Effrosyni Moschoudi

*The author provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review which follows*

FROM THE AUTHOR:

“When Sofia falls in love, a mourning spirit begins to haunt her… The Storm is the concluding part of the trilogy where the two stories of Sofia and Laura merge into one and redemption seems finally possible…

BRIGHTON 1988
Sofia does her best to get over Danny, but The Lady won’t leave her in peace. The spirit guides her to meet more people who knew Laura and now begins to haunt Danny as well. What will happen when he wears Christian’s scarf? And who is the third person being haunted, and why?

BRIGHTON 1940
Laura is relieved to hear about Christian’s narrow escape from Dunkirk, despite his serious injury. Things at home are as harrowing as ever, but she holds on to a glimmer of hope. When he discovers an old secret, Christian returns to Brighton. Will the old sweethearts find happiness at last or will Charles never allow it?”

My Recommendation:

“The Lady of the Pier – The Storm,” is the third installment in the exciting and mysterious paranormal romance called the Lady of the Pier Trilogy. To read my review of the first book, The Lady of the Pier – The Ebb, click here. To read my review of the second book, The Lady of the Pier – The Flow, click here.

The Lady of the Pier trilogy leads you on a supernatural trip between two time periods. The story fluctuates between Laura and Christian in Brighton in 1940 and Sofia and Danny in Brighton in 1988.

At the heart of the two intertwining love stories are the piers – one in Brighton, and the other in Corfu, Greece. Sofia and Laura are connected through haunting dreams even though they are separated by fifty years.

I absolutely loved the way these two stories twisted together supported by an enigmatic thread of paranormal activity that let the reader know there is more going on here than meets the eye. It appeared to me that both Sofia and Laura must learn about love the hard way, through their own choices. I was not far off in this assumption.

For me, the Brighton Pier was the symbolic element that acted as the bridge between both eras and both women. In the second book, I felt the tightening of the plot drawing both women along on a path to a destiny that must intersect in the last novel. In the first novel, there were two piers, one in Corfu and one in Brighton. In the second part of the series the two piers have merged into just one, the Brighton Pier where the stories of both women are were unfolding.

By the time I reached the last book, The Storm, I was dying to understand the mystery of the Lady of the Pier which linked these two couples together between the two intertwining stories. The writing stage had been skillfully set by Effrosyni Moschoudi and I was not disappointed in the revelations. The mystery had deepened to such an extreme I could not put this third book down. I literally finished the book in two nights!

In the final book, time and space merge in a reincarnation of the two time periods and the two couples. By the end of the book, I had stumbled upon the solution to the paranormal connection between the two couples. I was surprised by the depth and clarity of the characters and how neatly the story fit together. Some of the admissions from the characters caught me totally by surprise!

Once again, as with the previous two novels, the characters found a place in my heart. I was emotionally vested in the story. I literally shed tears at the explosive ending! In fact, I was sad to leave these characters behind. I finally understood them and learned that true love has no boundaries.

Of the three books in the Lady of the Pier series, I found The Storm to be the most satisfying. If you love a story that weaves supernatural events into a romantic storyline you will be thrilled with The Lady of the Pier, books one – three. This is one series I will read again and again when I want to be reminded of the power of everlasting love.
