IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

“Autumn 1784: Karin McNeal hasn’t grasped who she really is or her fierce birthright. A tragic secret from the past haunts the young Scots-Irish woman longing to learn more of her mother’s death and the mysterious father no one will name. The elusive voices she hears in the wind hint at the dramatic changes soon to unfold in the mist-shrouded Alleghenies.

Jack McCray, the wounded stranger who staggers through the door on the eve of her twentieth birthday and anniversary of her mother’s death, holds the key to unlock the past. Will Karin let this handsome frontiersman lead her to the truth and into his arms, or seek the shelter of her fiercely possessive kinsmen? Is it only her imagination or does someone, or something, wait beyond the brooding ridges—for her?”

(A revised version of romance novel Daughter of the Wind)

MY RECOMMENDATION:

I’ve been a fan of Beth Trissel’s books for several years. I haven’t read a single book of her’s that I haven’t enjoyed. In fact, this book fell off my (magical) radar until this summer when I saw her advertise it on social media. What a great find to add to my Kindle library.

Book one, “The Bearwalker’s Daughter,” is a historical romance filled with lots of great Native American lore, early American history, magic, and even some sizzling sex!

There’s a mystery that swirls around the birth of Karin McNeal, and when in 1784, Jack McCray finds the bonny lass, he’s bewitched by her unusual beauty. Karin is haunted by voices on the wind who seem to be calling out to her. She can’t figure out what the voices mean or why she has been chosen to hear them. The only thing she knows for certain is that her mother died shortly after her birth, and no one will tell her who her father is.

Of course, Jack knows her birthright, having been sent by Karin’s father, Shequenor, who belongs to the bear clan, a division of the Shawnee tribe, to bring his daughter home to him. However, Karin isn’t aware of that fact, and even if she were, she is so drawn to Jack that nothing could tear her from his arms. Not even the family that raised her.

Jack is part of that family too, but tragically he was taken as a child by the Shawnee tribe, to be raised as Shequenor’s brother. That put him fighting on the wrong side of the war for American Independence. As a result, he is shunned by his step-father and half-brother.

The family discord sets the story in motion as Karin and Jack declare their love for each other. Now, Jack must deal with his emotions and love for Karin as he tries to figure out how to honor her father’s wishes. If they both survive it will be a miracle!

The magical aspects of this tale are what drew me deeper into the story. I love Native American lore, and knowing this author like I do, I knew there would be some spectacular paranormal activity, and there was!

This is not only Karin and Jack’s love story, it is also the love story of Karin’s parents, finally coming full circle. This is a fabulous read that kept me enthralled for hours.

I’m looking forward to reading the second book in the series, “Through the Fire, book two” in the Native American Warrior Series.

book reviews

Title: Soul Swallowers, The Shattered Sea, Book One

Amazon Author Page: D. Wallace Peach

Publication Date: June 30, 2018

Formats: Paperback & Kindle

Genres: Fantasy, New Adult & College, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Romantic

Goodreads

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

“When swallowed, some souls gift insights, wisdom, a path to understanding. Others unleash power, proficiency with a sword, and indifference to death. One soul assimilates with ease. But swallow a host of the dead and risk a descent into madness.

Estranged from his family over the murder of his wife, young Raze Anvrell wields his fists to vent his rage. Then a chance at a new life beckons, and he retreats to the foothills of the Ravenwood, the haunt of unbound ghosts. He and his mentor build a freehold, a life of physical labor and the satisfaction of realizing a dream. They raise horses and whittle by the fire until the old man dies, and Raze swallows his first soul.

When his brother reaches out, open wounds begin to scar. But the tenuous peace won’t last. While those who rule the Vales yield to the lure of their ambitions, slavers of Ezar roam the countryside, hunting for human chattel. While one man manipulates the law, another heeds the souls of violence howling in his head.

Raze too listens to his soul’s whispers, and as danger intrudes on his quiet life, he has no choice but to return to his father’s world and join the fight.”

***
“In this completed series, epic fantasy blends with the wisdom of old souls to create a unique coming of age story of courage and honor in the midst of evil. Slavery is pitted against freedom, anger against forgiveness, and a desire to live peacefully against the necessity to take up the sword.

It’s a story of bitter estrangement and broken hearts, of deception and unfettered ambition. For Raze Anvrell it’s a journey of violence, redemption, and his soul’s growth as he transforms from a reckless youth into a man with a rich legacy of souls.

Magic, politics, love, and madness collide in this fantasy adventure. For lovers of beauty and battle, and complex characters willing to risk everything in the fight for their souls.”

MY RECOMMENDATION:

D. Wallace Peach has the rare distinction of becoming my favorite fantasy author based on the quality of her storytelling methods. I haven’t read a single book by this author that I haven’t loved.

Imagine my glee, when I found out she had begun a new series, called, The Shattered Sea. Book One, The Soul Swallowers, is everything I knew it would be—brilliant, creative, and unforgettable.

When Raze Anvrell leaves the wealth and the safety of his home after his young wife is brutally murdered, he suspects that his family was to blame for her demise. Determined to strike out on his own, he flees to Ravenwood, where the souls of the unbound dwell.

Everyone wears an empty soulstone which is given to all of the people at the Temple of Souls. When people die their soul transfers into the pendant. To die without their soulstone allows a soul to drift forever in the ether. The individual’s skills, aptitudes, and the very essence of their personality would then be lost to future generations.

Raze meets Briyon, the owner of his own freehold, who invites the young man to join him in making a new life. Briyon becomes the father figure in Raze’s life and when he dies, Raze swallows his first soul.

Imagine being who you are and accepting the soul essence of someone else into your existence. New skills and knowledge must integrate, for better or worse. If you swallow too many souls, disaster prevails as the personalities clash for dominion, madness being the end result.

It is in this world where Raze follows the whispers of his soul into unknown territory where only the brave survive.

I felt the magic breathe through the pages of this book with an ancient wisdom that touched my own soul. At the book’s ending, I found myself reluctantly thrust back into my world hating to let the fantasy go.

Title: Myths of the Mirror, Dragon Soul Quartet #1

Amazon Author Page: D. Wallace Peach

Publication Date: 2nd edition, August 19, 2016

Formats: Paperback & Kindle

Genres: Science Fiction & Fantasy, New Adult & College, Coming of Age, Fantasy

Goodreads

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

“In the distant mountains of the Mirror, exiled skyriders fly dragons in the old Way, merged in flesh, blood, and bone. Twenty years past, they fought for the freedom of the valley’s dragons … and lost.

Imprisoned in the stone lair, the captive dragons beat their webbed wings and thrash serpentine tails. They tear their flesh and batter their bodies against the black bars of their cells, iron grating against iron. The once peaceful creatures howl, tormented by spine and spur, their fury matched only by their despair.

Treasa, the daughter of exiles, seeks the secrets of a hidden past and a father she never knew. Gifted with visions, she glimpses pieces of years long lost and a veiled future that only raises more questions. The dragons visit her dreams, laden with contradictions that tear at her heart—for one day she sails in unfettered flight, her arms thrown wide, and the next she writhes in tortured darkness, desperate to be free.

The lair’s black-garbed riders sense the dragons’ growing savagery. Yet Conall longs to grasp their power, to subdue them and soar. He will endure the reek, filth, and terror of the lair to earn his right to fly. With a heart encased in steel, he masters the weapons of compliance to see his will done. At the cost of the woman he loves.

Then, a curved talon rends flesh and dragon scale, rattling against white ribs. Blood falls like rain and the world shifts. Treasa and Conall must decide who they are and what they stand for. Thus the battle for the dragon soul begins again. Alliances form, old myths are revealed, and new myths are born.

***

Myths of the Mirror may be read as a stand-alone coming of age fantasy novel appropriate for young adult readers or as the first book in an epic adventure that stretches from the small village of Taran Leigh and the mountains of the Mirror to the Anghard Archipelago in the western sea.

Conall and Treasa face a world where wealth and power rule. Fear is the weapon of choice, and cruelty is tolerated for a pocket of gold. It’s a world that forces a choice—indifference, complicity, or defiance—each choice defining the core of who they are and who they will become.

The dragons of Taran Leigh, souls of grace and beauty, hang in the balance. Will they descend into the howling violence of terror and pain inflicted upon them by their tormentors? Or will they fly free, the creatures they were born to be? With each book, the stakes rise and far more than the dragons’ souls lie at risk.”

“The nervousness he felt upon mounting the dragon had ebbed, and he stroked its back, almost affectionately. He sensed a growing bond between them, a grace in their flight as natural as breathing. There were times when he glided over green fields, gazed into the weave and texture of leaves, that he released the reins and simply let the dragonfly. In those rare moments, he felt a profound sense of peace and deeply free.” –Myths of the Mirror.”

MY RECOMMENDATION:

After I finished reading D. Wallace Peach’s The Rose Shield Series, I found myself bereft, desiring more of her storying. A visit to her Amazon Author page gave me everything I needed. I was thrilled to find her first series, Dragon Soul Quartet and couldn’t wait to dive right in.

The Myths of the Mirror, Book One, is a haunting tale of resplendent dragons, exhilarating magic, and how the myths of the people from Taran Leigh and the Mirror intertwine and intersect. Their myths become the allegory from where ancient enlightenment springs.

Far from the village of Taran Leigh is a spot in the wilderness where a bowl-shaped lake, called the Mirror, hosts a civilization of people who ride the bejeweled dragons in the Old Way communicating with their souls as they become one with the dragon’s spirit. This merging of man and dragon comes by invitation from the dragon, signifying a magical union like no other.

In comparison, the dragons of Taran Leigh are imprisoned, forced to live in a stone lair, and brutalized by their captors, all the while compelled to perform for “coin.” Years ago, the greedy governors tricked the skyriders into believing their lies, looking only for ways to line their own pockets. The people of Taran Leigh have lost their connection to the old ways.

It takes a calamity greater than Terasa and Conall have ever known to teach them the myths of their people. Conall faces his demons while Terasa learns the myths of her father and those of the magical dragons who teach the lessons of “the tie” and of “the belonging.”

The author shared with me her role as the “Droom,” in the novel, the ancient seer casting her rune stones to predict which direction the story would take. Read the post here to gain more insight into this author’s creativity.

I know I’ve written before how I feel like a silly fan gushing over Diana Peach’s work. But, I must share with you that this book touched me in ways I have never experienced before. It was as if I had my own epiphany, at one with the divine truths the author penned in this tome. I can only say that my reading was akin to a spiritual encounter. The entire reason I read is for that magical connection, and The Myths of the Mirror delivers that and more.

I loved this first book so much, I’ve bought the entire series! ❤

My review of Book 2: Oathbreaker’s Guild

My review of Book 3: Farlander’s Law

In the Author’s Words:

“The epic adventure concludes as the Shiplord vies for what he desires—the throne of Ellegeance. Their power in jeopardy, influencers surrender their oaths, their loyalties fractured. Rose, a child of untrained and reckless talent, once again becomes a pawn in the quest for control.

As the Cull Tarr solidify their rule, Guardian plots rebellion. Catling and Whitt, each gifted with singular skills, seek to sway the course of the conflict. Oathbreakers, traitors, and those desperate to save Rose collide in a final battle for the realm.

Yet, a third player emerges in the deadly game. The kari, spirits of a sentient planet, command the air, water, and land. They manipulate events to satisfy their sovereign designs and care not who survives the human war.”

The Rose Shield Series (1)

My Recommendation:

The last book in the Rose Shield series opens with Caitling’s realization that she has nothing left to lose but her life. The new rulers, the Cull Tarr, seek to control her and her daughter, Rose who is only beginning to wield the natural influence she has inherited. The child is untrained, and her abilities far surpass those of anyone in the Influencers Guild. If the shipbuilder can control Catling and Rose, he would solidify his rule.

The kari, speaking as the goddess or the soul of the planet understands this dynamism between the power of the luminescence and the magic that Rose and her mother possess. She admits that Catling and Rose are far more powerful than was realized. Catling is the catalyst and the kari will get their reckoning though her.

As the war rages on, the Cull Tarr War and the high wardens have slaughtered and decimated the population of the native Farlanders. Whitt and Sim have battled for the lives of their people, losing more than they ever considered possible.

Yet, this devastating loss imparts a wisdom concerning the sentience of the planet onto Whitt. He feels the spirit of the goddess and finally learns the truth of what the luminescent lifeblood represents to the people. The realization that the kari exist beyond the luminescence and that the world is sentient weighs heavily on Whitt. He aligns with Guardian hoping that between Kaden and Catling their world can be saved.

The ending is explosive and unexpected as the storytelling skills of D. Wallace Peach burst into play. As with the other novels in the series, the writing in this final book is superb, with rich descriptions that put the reader in the midst of the action.

I can’t believe it’s over…

The Rose Shield Series

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

“Immune to influence, the Cull Tarr infiltrate the tier cities, and the Shiplord plies the queen for a bond that will cede her realm. Catling’s daughter, Rose, becomes collateral in a game of power, and the only way to save her is to lose her. Oathbreaker and lawbreaker, Catling rebels, and her power grows more deadly.

In the frozen lands of the Far Wolds, treaties collapse. Forced to choose sides, Whitt betrays his oath. Fugitives, he and young Rose traverse the realm and enter the rebel world of the Farlanders. The brief tranquility of their lives crumbles as Ellegean aggression escalates. Sent by the queen to broker a lasting peace, Gannon proposes a risky strategy—to win the battle for the Far Wolds, Whitt and the people he loves must lose the war.”

hand-307786_640My review of Book 1: Catling’s Bane

My review of Book 2: Oathbreaker’s Guild

MY RECOMMENDATION:

After the birth of Rose, Catling struggles to balance her oath to the queen with the needs of her daughter. She hopes that if she fulfills her obligations without question, the queen will leave her and her daughter alone. But it’s not to be. Catling makes the decision to increase her power which places her in more peril than ever before.

Meanwhile, war is brewing, and the Cull Tarr will stop at nothing to take control of and govern Ellegeance. Catling and the Influencer’s Guild are tested past their limits. If they can survive the takeover they might be of use to the new rulers.  When it’s discovered that the Cull Tarr are unaffected by the influencer’s magic, the Influencer’s Guild members now become pawns in the hands of their captors.

After the Cull Tarr attack on Ellegeance, the provinces are ripped apart. The people in the lower tiers become slaves. Looking to expand their control, the High Ward authorizes his guards to forcibly evict the Farlander’s from their homes and businesses.

As the High Wardens expand their territories, the Cull Tarr way of life becomes the law of the land. That leaves the native people of the planet, the Farlander’s, embroiled in a war they didn’t ask to be part of. The Farlanders are ready to sacrifice their lives for the land they love.

No longer part of Catling’s life, Whitt has fallen in love with Sim, a Farlander he met when he was a child. Sim teaches Whitt the ways of the kari, the spirits of the land. Luminescence is the lifeblood of the planet connecting them to each other and the wilderness that surrounds them. Sim possesses the knowledge of kari magic and she uses it to their advantage.

Before long, Whitt understands that the planet is sentient, a force that holds more power than the humans can imagine. As the war rages on, the kari manipulate events to benefit the planet without regard to who might survive the human war.

This series has captured my heart. I find myself bewitched with the magic of the sentient planet and the luminescence that flows and links each of the books in the series to the other. D. Wallace Peach is a master storyteller weaving a tale of suspense filled with the enchantment of a far-off magical land. The characters are rich and multifaceted, often filled with surprises I didn’t see coming. They do not disappoint.

The next book in the series is Book IV – Kari’s Reckoning. In my emotionally connected status to this series, I feel the end of the saga approaching. Sadness grips me. I don’t want the magic to end. Stay tuned…

D. Wallace Peach started writing later in life after the kids were grown and a move left her with hours to fill. Years of working in business surrendered to a full-time indulgence in the imaginative world of books, and when she started writing, she was instantly hooked. Diana lives in a log cabin amongst the tall evergreens and emerald moss of Oregon’s Coastal Mountains with her husband, two dogs, and Pinky the Cat.
