Happy Boxing Day!

Boxing Day is a British tradition! The day after Christmas, December 26th, is called Boxing Day because:

It was a custom on that day for tradesmen to collect their “Christmas boxes,” gifts of money or goods in return for reliable service all year. Do you have any tradespeople who have been especially helpful this year—your postman, fix-it guy, city doorman?

 Blurb:

Fourteen-year-old Abigale Forester, recently orphaned and a ward of the State of Illinois moves from Chicago to Florida to live with her aunt, her last living relative. Magnolia Forester becomes her legal Guardian, and together they claim an ancient inheritance; land that belonged to Abby’s mother’s family for generations.

Holding onto the only piece of her mother Abby has left, a calcite pendant and her mother’s most sacred possession, she discovers the truth of her legacy. The pendant is more significant than she could possibly imagine. Forged from a giant mystical heart-shaped stone found on the very swamp land Abby now owns, it holds the power of her ancestors.

But with that power comes greater responsibility, one that pits her against Rafe Cobb, a greedy land developer, who will stop at nothing to own Abby’s swampland.

As Abby learns to be part of a family again and explores her love of horses with friends, Savanna, and Blake, the swamp slowly gives up some of its secrets. She is summoned by a primeval nymph, who teaches Abby that her true destiny is to protect the nymphs from evil in an ever-changing modern world.

Can Abby save the swamp and the Naiad Nymph Clan from certain destruction before it is too late?

The most recent review:

“A beautifully told tale about an orphaned teen, Abigale Forester, who is uprooted from her home in Illinois after her mother’s death and her father’s disappearance. She is sent to live with her Aunt Magnolia in Florida where she is given a plot of land owned by her mother. This land is more than just a swamp.

Abigale realizes the value of this plot of land when she experiences its magic. It is inhabited by fairies and plants that have magical healing properties. She soon realizes through some ethereal visits from some of these fairies on the land that her role is to protect the swamp and all its creatures and plants from harm.

When Abigale and her aunt receive threats to their lives if they do not sell the land, Abby turns to friends for support. Abby’s mother gifted to her a magical necklace made from the calcite stone in the swamp to give her strength to do what she needs to do in her role as protector.

The author has created a lovely tale of the magic and mystery of fairies. This is an enjoyable read not only for middle-graders, preteens, and young adult girls but also for adults like me. I thoroughly enjoyed this fascinating tale and look forward to more in this series. This talented author enables the reader to see the fairies as real creatures who are benevolent and only want to help mankind.”

Would you like to own your own calcite fairy stone pendant?

My dear friend, Irene Skov-Hansen, from IreneDesign2011, created and designed two amazing styles of calcite fairy pendants just like the one that Abby Forester wears in The Heart Stone Chronicles. The pendant, along with the book makes the perfect gift for that special girl in your life.

In my novel, the Collective is comprised of seven fairy nymph clans who are differentiated by the color of their eyes which mimics the colors of a rainbow. I took some liberties with the Greek myths, to say the least.

I used the symbolism of a rainbow to represent the elements of the supernatural, hope, and enlightenment.

“In Thai (Theravada) Buddhist mythology, the rainbow represents a staircase linking the earth to the heavens which the nagas (member of a class of mythical semidivine beings, half human and half cobra) can descend to the earth.” (Khandro.net)

Nymphs are divided into types (here, alphabetically) and where they reside on the earth.

Alseids (groves) color: violet

Dryads (forests) color: orange

Hamadryads (trees) color: yellow

Meliaes (meadows) color: blue

Naiads (springs and rivers) color: green

Oceanids (the sea) color: indigo

Oreads (mountains) color: red

The Fairy Nymph Collective resides between the tears in the fabric of time called the horizontal realm. The nymphs were placed here by the gods to protect the goddess, Mother Gaia.

My protagonist, Abby Forester received the gift of clairaudience from the gods for a reason. She acts as a liaison between the human world and the Collective.

Abby’s ability to communicate telepathically with the animals, birds, insects and even the fairy nymphs require her to shoulder a responsibility most teenagers wouldn’t be able to handle. Soon it becomes apparent that the blessings of an inheritance sometimes require the repayment of a debt.

“The Collective,” A Tanka

It’s that time of the week and if the itch to write has turned into a slow burn… Get writing!

Join my weekly Tanka Tuesday Poetry Challenge and get your brain waves thinking in new ways. Write some poetry!

This week, I’ve used the word, “ethos,” as my synonym for character and “altruism” for the word, affection. The words led me back to the fairy nymph collective portrayed in my debut novel, The Heart Stone Chronicles: The Swamp Fairy.

I am honored to share that my book cover is a semi-finalist in the AUTHORSdb 2017 book cover contest. My thanks must go to my cover designer, Wendy Anne Darling of Bookxeedo Book Covers. She is a graphic artist and helped to bring the swamp fairy to life. Wendy drew the fairy free-hand just as I had seen her appear to me in the swamp that November of 2014.

In fact, Wendy also designed the cover for Marjorie Mallon’s book, The Curse of Time: Book One, Bloodstone!

The Heart Stone Chronicles: The Swamp Fairy

KCBooks and Music (Kev) has given me an excellent review of The Heart Stone Chronicles, The Swamp Fairy. Please stop by his blog, take a peek, and say hello. ❤

“Finding the Heart Stone,” A Haibun

Welcome to my contribution to my Weekly Poetry Challenge, where you can write your own Haiku, Tanka, or Haibun using the prompt words of “stone and turn.” The words were perfect for me this week.

Journey with me into the magic of the horizontal realm from The Heart Stone Chronicles – The Meadow Fairy, to be published in the spring of 2018.

I stood at the muddy edge of the barren field gazing at the leafless tree located near its center. Before me stood a massive cottonwood tree bursting with hefty trunks growing in different directions battered by the howling prairie winds. At the top, the branches grew into a tangle as if the wind had forced the limbs to grow into a muddled canopy sheltering that which remained buried below.

I stepped forward, and my feet seemed to move of their own accord. I plowed my way through the half frozen puddles that remained from the last snow, dirty slush squishing beneath my boots. Somehow I knew it was imperative that I reach the tree.

A desire so great
seethed deep within me – coaxing,
a provocation.
Always there calling my name
whispering songs from the nymphs.

As I grew closer, I noticed an icy crust of snow which swirled around the base of the enormous tree trunks like a woolen scarf wrapped around a chilly neck. Half buried, and partly exposed, I discovered the heart-shaped green calcite fairy stone. The snow had melted exposing the rough hewn upper portion, and rivulets of water formed a streamlet around the base of the rock like a moat rimming a castle fortress.

My own calcite pendant inherited from the calcite stone of my ancestor’s pulses and reflects the colors of the rainbow in the pools of melted snow around me. The heart responds to the heart, and the fairy Rath lifts.

I turn when I feel my eyes drawn to the tangled branches above. My hand covers my mouth in surprise as I watch the golden bee hive appear. It hangs, suspended in a timeless and hazy dimension filled with the ancient gifts from the gods. Gilded honey drips and the bees fall to the ground.

My quest has begun –
the sacred heart stone revealed,
the answers I seek.
Yet questions turn in my head.
What is slaughtering the bees?
