COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “WitchWood Estates Collectibles, Book 1: The Witches Journal,” BY AUTHOR, Patti Roberts, @PattiRoberts7

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

ABOUT THIS BOOK

“A fun little book to help you find your inner witch. Recipes, spells, birthstones, witchcraft terminology, candles, flowers, poetry, broom history, animal familiars, tea leaf reading, and more.

In fairy-tales of long ago, witches dressed in flowing black gowns, wore pointy hats, and flew around on broomsticks at night. By the light of the silvery moon, they would steal little children from their beds…

I’m sure some still do, but know this – not all witches have pointy noses, warts and eat small children. Some are just ordinary people, men, and women, who happen to believe there is magic in this world. The Witches’ Journal (book 1) is a fun collection of lots of all things magical from a coven of whimsical folk. We hope you enjoy the words and pictures contained within these pages. Blessed are those who carry kindness and love in their hearts, for they shall always have magic in their lives!”

I believe, so mote it be.

MY RECOMMENDATION

The Witches Journal is a lovely and entertaining collection of witchy recipes, spells, and poems contributed by readers. Even better, this is a FREE book! The book begins with “The Must Have Witch List,” including the moral code:

Many witches abide by a moral code—The Witches’ Rede. “An it harm none, do what ye will.” It simply means, as long as you do no harm to others, no harm shall be done to you. And – The Rule of Three or Three-fold Law, the Law of Return. The rule states that whatever energy a person puts out into the world, be it positive or negative, will be returned to that person times three. So be wise witches, young and old. Be kind, and always follow your heart.

Roberts, Patti. The Witches’ Journal: Recipes, spells, poems, tea leaves, candles, familiars, and more… (Witchwood Estate Collectables Book 1) . Paradox Book Cover-Formatting. Kindle Edition.

Following this charming introduction, the reader discovers recipes, quotations, bits of poetry from Shakespeare and other memorable names, including interesting facts about herbs, crystals, and magick. This is the perfect book for that special person in your life.

Some recipes have an old world appeal, while others tackle Paleo, Vegan, and Gluten-Free diets. I was surprised by the selection. “Nina’s Bloody Tarts,” sounds like the perfect Samhain treat. Halloween’s just around the corner, and “Chocolate Covered Mice” are sure to conjure up some smiles. The section featuring special brewed “teas” also caught my attention.

There’s a fabulous selection of free-style poetry, all written with a pagan twist including a section of spells and chants. I also loved the history of “brooms,” and Celtic Tree Astrology. Seriously… there is something here for everyone!

This FREE Kindle book also features a bonus introduction to the Witchwood series. Grab your copy today! So, Mote it Be!

About the Author

For me, talking to readers who love my stories and characters as much as I do is a dream come true. NOTHING is more exhilarating or inspiring. The author writes, yes, but I honestly believe it is the reader, who breathes life and soul into the characters in a book. Without the reader and their wonderful imaginations, stories and characters are words arranged neatly on a page waiting to be born, waiting to be loved.
To the reader, my characters and I thank you.

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “Winter Trials, Northern Witch Book One,” BY AUTHOR, K. S. Marsden, @KSMarsden

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

About this Book

With Midwinter just around the corner, Mark’s Nanna decides that it is time he learnt more about his family heritage. Learning witchcraft shouldn’t be too difficult, right?

Balancing school, magic, and the distractions of the gorgeous new guy, should make this a very interesting winter. ~~~~~Northern Witch Series

Amazon.com

MY RECOMMENDATION

I’ve got a treat for you today! This first book in the Northern Witch series is free! If you love YA fantasy like I do, this is an entertaining and different read. “Winter Trials” is a short read. I finished the book in one weekend.

We’re introduced to Mark, a sixteen-year-old student who lives in a small village in the Yorkshire countryside. In his final year of school, Mark learns that his Nana wants to introduce him to the family legacy. Nana’s a powerful witch and the head of a coven, and she encourages Mark to take up this part of his heritage. Mark’s father didn’t embrace the magical life, and that sets up some tension in this household.

At school, we meet Mark’s best friends, Harry and Sarah. When the new boy, Damien, arrives Mark falls for him in a big way. Mark’s a strong character in this coming of age tale. There are many tender and romantic moments between Mark and Damien, which I found endearing.

Amazon lists this book as ranking number five, in the FREE Teen & Young Adult LGBT Fiction category.

As the boys’ connection grows, the story picks up speed. After Mark becomes a witch in training, he notices that Damian’s surrounded by an unexplained aura. With the Winter Solstice arriving soon, it’s revealed that a demon wants to possess Damien! Mark asks Harry and Sarah, Nana, and Nana’s coven for help in saving him. Can they save him before it’s too late?

I enjoyed this magical read! The story is compelling and filled with enough romance and excitement to keep you reading into the night. Be prepared for the cliff-hanger ending. Book two, “Aware,” can be found HERE.

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “James: Witch Hunter,” & “Sophie: Witch Hunter,” BY AUTHOR, K. S. Marsden, @KSMarsden

Featuring Your Next Read!

About James: Witch Hunter

~Prequel to the Witch-Hunter trilogy~

James Bennett is a Yorkshire lad, making the big move to Oxford to start university.
His ambitions involve getting a good education; impressing the Rugby Club; and not throttling his roommate. All perfectly normal drama, until Hallowe’en.

A girl’s murder throws James into the dangerous world of witches, and those that hunt them.

Amazon.com

MY RECOMMENDATION

The Witch Hunter Series is: The Shadow Rises, The Shadow Reigns, The Shadow Falls, which I’ve read and reviewed. The stories revolve around the evil witches who sacrifice humans to increase their own powers. In this world, witches are evil and hunted down by the MMC (Malleus Maleficarum Council), a secret witch hunting organization tasked with neutralizing the threat from the witches.

James is a prequel to K.S. Marsden’s Witch-Hunter series. This book does a deeper dive into the main characters and their motivations. The background information helped me understand some decisions the characters made later in the subsequent novels.

After Yorkshire born James entered university, he is introduced to the snobby Hunter Astley. To his dismay, Hunter becomes his roommate. Soon, the boys find themselves facing off in the Rugby club where James notices Hunter has unusual physical abilities.

By the time Halloween rolls around, James follows Hunter to a warehouse where he witnesses a murder. This single event thrusts James into the heart of the witch hunter organization.

About Sophie: Witch Hunter

Everyone will betray you…

Sophie has always had a high opinion of herself. She is smart, beautiful, and meant for something more than a mundane, human life. From a young age she’s had to weigh duty against selfish desires. Her new friend Izzy starts to break down her carefully-constructed walls, and makes Sophie question everything she thought she knew.

With witch-hunters and witches vying for a place in her future, Sophie has to decide who she can trust.

This is a prequel to the Witch-Hunter trilogy, and contains spoilers from the very beginning.
We highly recommend you read The Shadow Rises, before finding out more about everybody’s favourite cold-hearted bitch.

Amazon.com

My Recommendation:

Sophie: Witch Hunter is the second prequel in the Witch Hunter series. In this book, the reader learns how Sophie evolves from a self-centered teen with uncontrollable witchy powers into the supremely evil Shadow Witch.

As Sophie gains more control of her powers she closes off the human side of her personality. She makes the choice to betray friends and lovers, all to move forward with her plan to cripple the organization that has persecuted her witch-kind for generations.

For me, James’ prequel was more important to the story line. Sophie’s evil was preordained in the series and other than the addition of a few facts about the Wiccans, Sophie’s prequel didn’t fill in much more pertinent information.

With that being said, both books are worth reading to gain further insight into the characters and the series. I read them both in one week. Many thanks to K. S. Marsden for the complimentary reader’s copies.

If you love paranormal fiction like I do, you will find that this was a most unusual series. There is something here for everyone: love, relationships, betrayal, magic, battles, and the hunt for the truth.

MY RATING FOR BOTH BOOKS

Your Happy Halloween read is the most terrifying read of them all!

Beware the WITCH HUNTER!

MY RECOMMENDATION:

The time has arrived! Persecuted witches are ready to take a stand against the witch hunters through the most powerful witch of all – The Shadow Witch. In an “unusual” twist, in this book, the witches are the bad guys and the witch hunters are the heroes. Pretty scary if you ask me!

To begin, George “Hunter” Astley finds himself on a reluctant holiday in Venice where he witnesses the attempted murder of Sophie Murphy, by a trio of witches.

Hunter is a seventh-generation witch hunter who works for the MMC – (Malleus Maleficarum Council) where he has the power to apprehend, bind, and kill witches who practice their craft.

Back in England, Sophie tracks Hunter down because she wishes to join the ranks of the witch hunters. Once accepted, she trains with Hunter’s mentor, Brian Lloyd. When Brian dies in a house explosion, Sophie returns to Hunter’s side to continue her education.

Hunter and Sophie fight their attraction to each other for as long as they can, finally succumbing to their desire.

By Halloween, the tensions between the witches and the witch hunters hit a crescendo. When Sophie is possessed by the evil Shadow Witch, she reveals that someone he loves will die. Hunter now fears for Sophie’s life.

With the deaths of many more witch hunters, Hunter vows revenge. Suddenly, the MMC is attacked and eventually the building is destroyed. Chaos ensues, and the witch hunter’s destinies are at stake.

The evilest of witches has once again come into power. Hunter can’t believe the Shadow Witch returned. His grandfather killed her in the 1940s. Yet, everything points to her as the culprit.

Who will win? What becomes of Hunter and Sophie’s love for each other? That and many other mysteries will be revealed in this FREE first book in the series.

This was an excellent read—definitely not a cozy mystery! There were plenty of twists and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat. Be prepared as the book ends with unresolved questions. I’ll look for Hunter and Sophie’s relationship to be explored further in the subsequent books. I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

Halloween is right around the corner and what’s better than reading some paranormal fiction?

These books put a spell on me!

MY RECOMMENDATION:

The first three-book series, “Witch Myth Siren Song,” introduces us to an interesting protagonist, Bay Bridges, who does everything possible to hide the fact that she is a witch. Considering she’s a bartender, that may not be a bad idea. Far from her coven, she needs to be near humans to control her magic.

Bay possesses an interesting magical ability. With a single kiss, she can suck the soul right out of you! Not a bad skill to have, especially when she finds her boss taking advantage of a defenseless woman.

Bay’s life changes the day she helps a woman out of a bad situation. Before you know it, she’s working together with the magical police to solve a string of bizarre murders.

The last three books begin with “the Witch Myth Series: A Yew Hollow Cozy Mystery,” which deals with a different protagonist named Morgan Summers.

The day Morgan returns home, she witnesses a horrible murder outside of the town hall where her family gathered to attend a meeting. The Summers family was legendary in town, and her ancestors were the founders of Yew Hollow. To make matters worse, every female born into her family’s coven is gifted with special “abilities” which meant she was a witch too.

Morgan’s ability allows her to communicate with the dead. So when the dead girl whose murder she witnessed asks for help, she can’t turn her down. Then in a bizarre twist, Morgan is blamed for the murder!

Remember, these books are cozy mysteries written with a paranormal touch. The protagonists are likable; the villains entertaining, and the reader encounters some fun plots along the way. These books were an easy read and the perfect way to get into the Halloween spirit!

COLLEEN’S 2019 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “The Vine Witch,” BY AUTHOR, Luanne G. Smith, @writersmith1

Featuring Your New Weekend Read!

This is a redo post for the 10/4/19 book review created with my previous “broken” theme. The sharing buttons were missing. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Colleen Chesebro

About “The Vine Witch”

A young witch emerges from a curse to find her world upended in this gripping fantasy of betrayal, vengeance, and self-discovery set in turn-of-the-century France.

For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn’t endorse the locals’ belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she’ll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won’t rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

Amazon.com

MY RECOMMENDATION

Prime members enjoyed two FREE pre-release Kindle books for the month of September, and “The Vine Witch,” was my first pick. This title releases on October 1, 2019, and is the first book in a two-book series.

I love fantasy and witches, so naturally; I had to read this book. Let me begin by saying that this was a debut novel, the likes I’ve never read before. Bravo to the author for creating such highly entertaining characters with an unpredictable plot!

“The Vine Witch” begins somewhere in France in the middle of a dark swamp. After reading a few pages, I realized that the main character was a frog. Not just any frog, but one that had endured an evil curse.

With great fortitude of spirit, Elena Boureanu eventually breaks the spell that cursed her. Now, seven years later, she emerges in a weakened state. Without her magical abilities, she’s left defenseless.

Elena finds her way back to Château Renard and the vineyard that has been her home since birth. If she can get back to Grand-Mère, she knows the older witch will help her figure out who placed the curse on her.

Upon her arrival, Elena sees that Château Renard is in disarray. Even worse, the home she was to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger who doesn’t believe in witchcraft.

Obsessed by revenge, Elena won’t rest until she can thwart the evil powers that threaten her, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

Excellent characters and dialogue kept the story moving forward until the shocking twist at the end. I thought the world-building was brilliant. Part of my intrigue was that the witches insured the success of the wine as they managed the vineyards. Not only that, other people in the community accepted the witches’ spell use instead of prosecuting them for practicing magic. What a novel concept in fantasy.

There’s plenty of magic and evil to keep the reader engaged. The themes of love, betrayal, and revenge figure prominently – the perfect ingredients for a fantasy novel. I couldn’t put this one down.

Even stranger, after finishing this book, I discovered a strange compulsion for wine. Just remember to read and drink responsibly.

Goodreads

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

“The queen of Magia and her court have fled their sun-filled Spanish homeland and the palace beneath the magnolia tree.

Arriving on the backs of geese and swans, they seek sanctuary in the magic garden of The Storyteller who welcomes them to the Emerald Island, a place where rain is almost a daily feature.

Grateful for their safe haven and the generosity of their host, the queen, and her courtiers embrace their new surroundings with delight.

As the seasons change throughout the year, they come into contact with many of the human and animal inhabitants of the garden and the surrounding forest, all of whom have a story to tell.

This is a magical fairy story infused with fantasy and romance, as well as opportunities for mischief in the company of goblins, witches and Lerpersians.”

MY RECOMMENDATION:

Step into the enchanting fantasy world of Sally Cronin’s Irish garden where beneath the roots of her Magnolia tree resides a magical kingdom filled with fairies, witches, goblins, and leprechauns protected by the wisdom of the magical Storyteller.

This book is part of a continuing saga called “Tales from the Garden,” which originated in the author’s Spanish garden. However, I feel that this book stood alone quite well on its own, as there was a chapter dedicated to catching the reader up with past fairy events.

The story is told in sections denoting each of the four seasons. Each segment of the story shares the lives of magical creatures who with help from the Storyteller and the inhabitants of the fairy kingdom manage to overcome insurmountable odds.

In its way, this book is a triumphant celebration to acceptance and getting along with others who are different from you. It also reinforces the creed that you should love your neighbor as thyself. These are fabulous themes to teach children and as gentle reminders for the rest of us who are enjoying our second childhood.

I spent a blissful three nights reading about Queen Filigree and her magical kingdom beneath the Magnolia tree. The ending was sweet and fulfilling, filled with new dreams and possibilities.

In addition, the reader will find exquisite drawings by the artist, Donata Zawadzka, to make this lovely book complete.

As the resident Fairy Whisperer in our blogging community, I can only say this book gratified my continuing belief in the fairies and all things magical.

I received a copy of this book from the author as a gift. ❤

Author, Sally Cronin

I have been a storyteller most of my life (my mother called them fibs!). Poetry, song lyrics, and short stories were left behind when work and life intruded, but that all changed in 1996. My first book Size Matters was a health and weight loss book based on my own experiences of losing 70kilo. I have written another ten books since then on health and also fiction including three collections of short stories. I am an indie author and proud to be one. My greatest pleasure comes from those readers who enjoy my take on health, characters and twisted endings… and of course, come back for more.

REVIEWS are so very important for an author and I am very grateful for the feedback that my books receive. If you have purchased or been gifted one of my books I would love to hear what you think about it. I do have some areas that you can help me with so that I can develop as a writer and it is in this post:

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

Join the eldest Ragwort brother, Rilefor, as he travels to Bandersnatch Swamp to find the one magic ingredient for an elixir to help the gnomes of Twistedoak reverse the curse of the dreaded Red Witch. Join Rilefor Ragwort as he and his faithful helpers, the tree-imps, and the owl, SilverSnow, outsmart goblins and mold-trolls as they attempt to find the missing piece of the puzzle to make the magic potion work.

Find all the books on Winterfrost Publishing and at your favorite online bookstore.

MY RECOMMENDATION:

The Reunion is the final book in the Ragwort Chronicles and introduces the reader to a new adventure called the Ragworts of Twistedoak. It is a delightful tale featuring Rilefor Ragwort, a gentle gnome who spends most of the cold winter looking for animals he can help. Be it with food or tending the animals caught in storms, Rilefor is the medicine man or healer of the woods. Rilefor’s mother, Nonna, taught him her healing ways when he was but a child-gnome. One valuable lesson was to never eat the Red Witch’s spotted mushrooms.

The gnome lives at the edge of the Dark Forest which is protected by the fairies, sprites, and the tree goddess, Laurelea. Part of his duties required him to be the caretaker of these woods which caused some to call him the Wizard of the Woods. For years, Rilefor grew and studied mushrooms trying to figure out how the Red Witch had enchanted the spotted fungi. His research would soon pay off.

The adventure begins during Rilefor’s favorite time of the year – Spring. When a ruffle of butterflies appears with the Queen of the Butterflies, Farfal, in tow; she asks Rilefor to find a way to destroy the red mushrooms. The Red Witch and her hoards have overrun Twistedoak with the poisonous red mushrooms.

The gnomes need Rilefor’s help if they are to survive a war with the Red Witch. It’s up to Rilefor to develop a potion, but that requires a trip to Bandersnatch Swamp to find the missing ingredients. Rilefor is tested even though his magic is strong. If he survives the battle between good and evil, it will be a miracle!

I loved this story. I know it’s geared toward younger readers, but it was a fantastic step back in time where I could embrace my love of fairies, gnomes, and magic like I did as a child. I was in reading heaven!

The illustrations are excellent, and I can only imagine a child’s joy at seeing the characters come to life before their eyes. This series would be a unique gift for that special child or the grandchildren in your life. Most importantly, the stories aren’t written just for girls. The author added the right amount of farts and burps to delight all children which will have them dissolved into laughter in seconds.

If you are looking for an unforgettable gift for the upcoming holiday season, this would be on my list. I loved and enjoyed this story so much that I’ve added it to my ME TIME category for children’s literature. I guess Grandma’s know what they like. ❤

Here is a brief description and link to the first two books in the series. Enjoy!

The Ragwort Chronicles Book I: The Beginning

“Meet Poppa Ragwort!  A Master Carpenter in the Village of Brokenfell, not far from Twistedoak. He loved to puff on his pipe while sitting in his favorite spot, the hand of an ancient warrior dwarf statue and carving toys for the children or observing the hustle and bustle of the village below. This is the first of three books about the Ragwort family of gnomes who befriended Phillip and Ivy Tuber, on their way to the Farmer’s Market in Phillip’s Quest, Book I: Winterfrost.

The Ragwort Chronicles Book II: Along The Way

2016 Finalist in the Next Generation Book Awards for Children’s Picture Book, ages 6-10 and Overall Book Design and Layout

“There was a line of pines that bordered the stream but were far back enough to provide cover for the watching eyes. This time, they were not the eyes of the friendly little tree imp. Three dark shadows were slinking behind the trees and following Roscoe. Although they were just shadows, they had luminous yellow eyes, like cat’s eyes, glowing in the dark.”

About the Author

Although a native New Yorker, author Belinda Miller, now makes her home with her husband and two cats, in Manassas, Virginia. A Master’s Degree in Education and a Bachelor’s in Literature and the Language Arts fueled her love for writing and literature, especially children’s literature.

Belinda taught developmental reading in the late 1970s, in an economically and culturally diverse school district in Leavenworth, Kansas. The district had few books suitable for that demographic, so she wrote and adapted the curriculum based on the literature she loved.

After leaving Kansas, Miller entered the corporate world. She retired in 1998, due to a debilitating fall which affected the progression of her FSH Muscular Dystrophy. In 2013, while recuperating from a broken back, Mrs. Miller started writing the Phillip’s Quest series, inspired by the illustrations of Dean Kuhta, and his desire to put his drawings into words.

With the help and constant support of her husband Gary, the love of her family, friends, and the drawings of her talented illustrators, Belinda has rekindled her love of writing and children’s literature. She has also developed a children’s jewelry line based on Phillip’s Quest and the Ragwort series.

The Elf Killer – Part Two

My friend Melissa Barker-Simpson sponsors a weekly writing contest called “Mel’s Midweek Writing Menagerie.” Each week on a Thursday, she posts a new prompt, and contributions will are shared via Featured Fiction. Check out her personal blog to get all the rules.

Here are the options for this week:

Option 1: Sentence Starter –

“What the hell do you expect me to do with that?”

This sentence can appear anywhere in the story. The maximum word count is 1,000 words. The genre can be any of your choosing; either factual or fiction based. You may use art to interpret the sentence, or poetry if you wish.

Option 2: Fanfiction –

Write a scene with one of your favourite characters from film or television.

I decided that I am going to choose Option 1 and continue on with the story of Rawmall, the half-breed elf. Here is The Elk Killer, Part One if you would like to catch up.
I am learning to be a “pantser,” and letting the words flow…

~

Rawmall continued his way through the forest walking in an easterly direction, cautiously looking for any telltale signs of the elf killer. Whoever had killed the blue haired elf was brutal. The killer had left the body to rot and decay where the elf had been slain.

Rawmall shook his head in disbelief. The Elves of Timmoral Forest had a code. They always buried their dead, even their enemies. No elf would have killed another in this manner, he thought as he trudged through a dense copse of trees. Decomposed leaves made a carpet beneath his feet. He pushed his way through an almost impenetrable thicket of bushes with leaf tendrils that curled as they pulled at his arms.

Through the leafy canopy above, Rawmall could see black clouds building against the dusky blue sky. A noticeable greyness descended upon the forest. The wind blew from the north and white lightning sliced through the sky.

In a hurry to beat the weather and to get to the edge of the forest and the elven community of Morr, Rawmall began to run. He positioned his quiver and bow over his shoulder tying the deer skin laces to keep his equipment from falling off his body. He kept up the steady rhythm of his running feet, breathing to conserve energy as his long blond hair streamed out after him.

The velocity of the wind continued to increase pushing against the elf making his trek more difficult with each gust. Determined, Rawmall ran faster, his feet so swift they barely touched the ground. Thunder rumbled and fat drops of rain began to fall slowing his pace. He smelled the smoke from the Village of Morr before he saw it.

Or, what was left of it. The village was a shell of burned out homes. Acrid smoke rose in dark smudges blown about by the mighty wind. Rawmall walked amongst the burned out shells of the elven homes looking for bodies. There were no bodies anywhere in the ruins. From what he could tell the flash point of where the fire began was at the town center, on the village green. A peculiar smell lingered in the air and he could not place its source.

Fifty elves, men, women, and children lived in this small community. Where could they have gone, thought Rawmall? He ran the perimeter of the village noticing that the fire stopped at the edge of the forest. It had not set any of the trees on fire around the boundary of the village. The outside limits were scorch free.

Rawmall noticed that one of the homes had less damage than the rest. He gingerly walked through the scorched earth into what was left of the elven home. A thick oaken table had been turned over in the middle of the room. To the right of the table were the remains of a cooking fire where a great cauldron was suspended, bubbling and hissing over hot coals untouched by the fire that had devastated the village.

Rawmall remembered what the strange smell was once he peered inside the boiling cauldron. There bobbing up and down was the head of a human! Short, closely cropped dark hair clung to the scalded skin. The eye sockets were bare as loose flesh boiled away from the skull leaving thick fat floating on the surface of the boiling liquid. The smell was unforgettable.

“This is black magic! What the hell do you expect me to do with that?” Rawmall said loudly, startled by the sound of his own voice, and the contents bubbling in the cauldron.

“Whatever you want to do with it,” said the voice of a woman in a cunning whisper.

Surprised, Rawmall spun around grabbing his bow, all the while fixing an arrow in place ready to shoot in the direction of the voice. There in front of him stood the small figure of a human woman wearing a long black dress and cape. She shook her long dark hair at him in defiance as she stood waiting for the arrow to find its mark. Her ruby lips curved into a sneer of hatred.

“I suppose you want to know what I did with your elven friends,” said the woman slowly licking her voluptuous lips as she stared at Rawmall.

“That would be nice to know,” growled Rawmall furious with himself that this evil wench had found him again.

“I bewitched them,” she said watching Rawmall’s fury mount even further. “This is the human that killed the elf in the forest. I bewitched the elves and hid them before he got to the village to do any more damage. They are all safe. The damn fool burned the village. When he was done, I took care of the human,” said the dark-haired woman striding across the floor toward Rawmall.

“In fact, the way I see it, you now owe me,” she said placing her hands on her hips staring at him through hooded eyes.

“I owe you nothing,” snarled Rawmall. “Free my friends, then we’ll talk. I do not associate with witches, so make it quick!”

Clearly irritated by Rawmall’s words, the woman’s eyes began to glow a deep emerald-green and a thick noxious fog filled the room. Hours later Rawmall woke up on the floor of the elven hut. The woman was gone.

895 Words – Made up as I typed. Hope you enjoy!
